لا شُجَّجَت في مَحَطً الضَّيمِ أوتَادِي
Al-Rayy summoned me from afar, and I said to her:
Rayy called to me from afar, so I said to her:
May my tent pegs never be driven where humiliation comes to rest.
May my tent-pegs never be hammered into a campsite of humiliation.
كُفِّيdesist فماfor ... nothing لَكِfor you عنديwith me غَيرُexcept مُلجمَةٍa bridled mare
كُفِّي فما لَكِ عندي غَيرُ مُلجمَةٍ

تختالُ ما بين إصداري وإيرادي
Hold off—for you will get from me nothing but a bridled mount,
Desist, for I have nothing for you but a bridled mare,
prancing between my going forth and my return.
Prancing as I lead her out and bring her in.
إنif لمnot أَرُعكِI terrify you بِخَيلِwith horses الصبُّحِdawn مُوقَرةًladen

If I do not strike terror into you with dawn's cavalry, laden
If I do not terrify you with dawn's horses, laden
with lions marshaled in the armorer's woven mail,
With lions arrayed in an armorer's weave,

ولا تَسَمَّى بغير اليُتمِ أولادي
then may I find no friends of mine in your land,
Then may I meet no friends of mine in your land,
and may my children be called nothing but orphans.
And may my children be called nothing but orphans.
