بذلت لي الأعراض والدهرُ مقبل

بذلت لي الأعراض والدهرُ مقبل

وتبذل لي الاقبال والدهر معرض

وتبذل لي الاقبال والدهر معرض

You offered me rejection while fortune turned toward me;

You turned away though fate was coming round to me,

You offered me cold neglect when fortune was smiling upon me,

And you offer me welcome while fortune turns away.

And fate turned full against me when you looked my way.

and now you offer your favor when fortune has turned away.

وتبسطني إذ ليس ينفع بسطكم

فهلا أبحت البسط إذ كنت تقبض

فهلا أبحت البسط إذ كنت تقبض

And you cheer me when your warmth is of no use;

Why lavish gifts when gifts avail me nothing?

You extend your warmth to me when your warmth is of no avail;

Why, then, did you not grant that warmth when you were withholding it?

Why not reveal your giving hand now you withhold?

why did you not grant that warmth when you chose to withhold it?
