أقمنا ساعة ثم إرتحلنا
وماand not يغنىavails المشوقthe yearning one وقوفa stay ساعهan hour
وما يغنى المشوق وقوف ساعه
We stayed an hour, then departed.
We stayed an hour, then we departed
We lingered for an hour, then we journeyed on,
And an hour's stay is of no use to one who longs.
And an hour's pause brings no solace to one yearning
Yet what can halting for an hour avail the longing lover?
كأنas though الشملthe company لمnot يكنbe ذاpossessed of اجتماعunity
كأن الشمل لم يكن ذا اجتماع
إذاwhen ماemphatic particle شتتscattered البينseparation إجتماعهits union
إذا ما شتت البين إجتماعه
As though the company had never been united,
As though we were never united
As though the gathered souls had never been united,
When separation scatters its union.
When separation has scattered our gathering
Once separation has scattered their embrace.
