خلاءempty منof الأهلينthe inhabitants موحشةdesolate قفراdeserted
Peace upon a home we left, and which was left behind,
Peace be upon the house we left behind
Peace be upon an abode that we departed, left behind,
Empty of its people, desolate and deserted.
Empty of people, lonely and barren
Devoid of its people, desolate and barren.
تراهاyou see it كأنas though لمnot تغنbe inhabited بالأمسyesterday بلقعاًa wasteland
ولاnor عمرتwas inhabited منby أهلهاits people قبلناbefore us دهراfor an age
You see it a wasteland, as though it had not been inhabited yesterday,
As if it never echoed with joy just yesterday
You see it as a wasteland, as though it had not flourished only yesterday,
Nor lived in by its people for an age before us.
Or was inhabited by people before us
Nor had been inhabited by its folk for an era before us.
فياso O دارhome لمnot يقفركleave you deserted مناof us اختيارناour choice
ولوand if أنناwe نتسطيعwe could كنتyou would have been لناfor us قبراa grave
O home, our own choice did not leave you empty of us;
O house, we did not abandon you by choice
O home, it was never our choice to leave you deserted,
Had we been able, you would have been our grave.
If we could, you would be our grave
And had we possessed the power, you would have been our grave.

But decrees from God were put into effect,
But it was the decree of Allah
Yet divine decrees were irrevocably carried out,
Crushing us, whether we yield to what befell willingly or by force.
That demolished us, willingly or not
Subduing us, willingly or by force, to whatever befell.

And O finest home, left behind worthy of praise,
O best house, you remained virtuous
O best of abodes, you were left behind praised and cherished;
May morning rainclouds water you—how glorious, and how bitter!
The valleys quenched you, through good times and bad
May the morning rainclouds water you, however momentous and bitter our fate!

O you who hosted those gardens, protect them
O beholder of those gardens that were once encircled
Gardens of glass that turned dust-gray after we left.
Gardens of ponds, now turned to dust after us
By crystalline meadows, which after us have turned to dust!

And O Time, convey my greeting to its inhabitants,
O fate, convey my greetings
O Time, convey my greetings to its former dwellers,
Even if they dwell in the two Mervs or have crossed the river.
To those who live there, be they near or far
Even if they now abide in the two Marws or have crossed the River.

So patience with Time's assault upon them and its decree,
Have patience with the tyranny of fate over them
So patience in the face of Time's assault and its judgment upon them,
Though patience tastes burdensome and bitter.
Though the taste of patience is bitter
Even if the taste of patience is burdensome and bitter.

If it has made us thirsty, long did it give us drink;
If our thirst was long, so was our drink
For if it has made us thirst, how long it once quenched our thirst,
And if it saddened us there, things long went smoothly.
And if our time there was bad, so was our joy
And if it grieved us there, how long it once made life easy.

And O beloved home, may there never depart
O beloved house, may the soft rain
And O beloved abode, may the dark, pouring raincloud
From your grounds dark rainclouds pouring rain upon them.
Not stop watering your open plains
Never depart from your grounds, showering them with rain!

As though no graceful, companionable women had dwelt in you,
As if no lovers ever lived in you
As though you were never inhabited by tender, charming maidens,
Nor proud men who resembled the radiant stars.
Or virtuous men who shone like bright stars
And noble, proud men who shone like radiant stars.

They all perished and vanished, and their separation endured.
They perished and vanished, yet their traces remain
They perished, passed away, and their distance became permanent;
For their like I let my tearful eye overflow.
For the like of them, my tears flow
For the likes of them, my tear-filled eyes have poured out their grief.

We shall patiently bear hardship after ease, in submission;
We will endure hardship after ease with obedience
We shall patiently endure hardship after ease in humble submission,
Perhaps noble patience will bring us ease afterward.
Hoping ease will follow our patience
In hope that noble patience will be followed by ease.

Yet how—even if it returned and we returned to its former days?
If we returned to those days, how would it be
Yet even if that era returned and we returned to its embrace,
Then what of those of its people who dwell in the grave?
For those who inhabit the grave?
What of those among its people who now dwell in the grave?

And O our time there, when will you return?
O our fate there, when will you return?
O bygone time we spent there, when will you ever return,
Then, if you return, we may praise your return and renewal.
So we thank you whether you give or prevent
So that we might praise your homecoming and renewed embrace, if you return?

Ah, many a day in its shelter, and many a night,
O Lord, grant us a day in it, or a night
For O, how many a day within its halls, and how many a night,
There, through merriment, we joined the sun and the full moon.
Reunited under the sun or moonlight
Where we joined the sun to the full moon with joyful revelry!

Alas for my wasted body, and alas for my enamored heart!
Soothe my sorrow, tempt my desire
Alas for my exhausted body! Alas for my tormented heart!
And alas for my bereaved soul, and alas for my burning liver!
Console my grief, relieve my burning inside
Alas for my bereaved soul! Alas for my burning spirit!

O anguish, how severe! O yearning, how sincere!
O grief, how contagious you are! O sorrow, how sharply you pierce!
And O longing, how grievous! O separation, how chilling!
O rapture, how intense! O separation, how cruel!
O longing, how painful you are! O separation, how cruel and cold!

And O Time, do not grow distant; O former days, do not change.
O fate, do not depart! O era, do not end!
O Time, do not estrange them further! O sacred bond, do not dissolve!
And O tears, do not freeze; O sickness, do not heal.
O tears, do not dry! O illness, do not heal!
O tears, do not freeze dry! O sickness of love, do not heal!

I shall mourn those days as long as the green sky stands
I will lament that time as long as greens grow
I shall mourn that bygone era as long as the green sky stands
As a roof over people, and the dust-gray earth bears us.
And roofs shelter people while dust covers me
As a ceiling over mankind, and the dusty earth bears us upon it.
