أرى دارها في كل حينٍ وساعةٍ

أرى دارها في كل حينٍ وساعةٍ

ولكن من في الدار عني مغيب

ولكن من في الدار عني مغيب

I see her house at every moment and hour,

I behold her dwelling at every moment and hour,

But the one within the house is hidden from me.

yet the one who abides within is veiled from me.

وكل نافصي قرب الديار وأهلها

وكل نافصي قرب الديار وأهلها

على وصلهم مني رقيبٌ مرقب

على وصلهم مني رقيبٌ مرقب

And every [unclear word] of mine near the dwellings and their people

And all who begrudge the nearness of the dwellings and their folk,

Is a vigilant watcher against my reaching them.

while a vigilant sentinel keeps watch over our union.

فيالك جار الجنب أسمع جسه

فيالك جار الجنب أسمع جسه

وأعلم أن الصين أدنى وأقرب

وأعلم أن الصين أدنى وأقرب

So, what a next-door neighbor—I hear his probing,

O neighbor by my side, whose slightest stir I hear,

And I know that China is nearer and closer.

yet I know that distant China is closer and nearer.

كصادٍ يرى ماء الطوي بعينه

كصادٍ يرى ماء الطوي بعينه

وليس إليه من سبيل بسبب

وليس إليه من سبيل بسبب

Like a thirsty man who sees the stone-lined well's water with his own eye,

Like a thirsty soul who sees the well's water with his own eyes,

And there is no way to reach it by any means.

yet finds no path or rope to reach it.

كذلك من في اللحد عنك مغيب

كذلك من في اللحد عنك مغيب

وما دونه إلا الصفيح المنصب

وما دونه إلا الصفيح المنصب

Likewise, the one in the burial niche is hidden from you,

Thus is the one concealed from you within the grave,

And nothing separates you from him but the stone slabs set upright.

with nothing between you save the upright slabs of stone.
