The impulses of passion grope toward union,
The passions of love yearn for connection
The impulses of passion wander toward union in the dark,
As a dim-sighted person travels by night toward the fire’s glow.
As fire creeps towards flint to spark
Just as a night-blind traveler is drawn toward the radiance of fire.
عللنيsoothe me بالوصلwith hopes of union منfrom سيديmy master
عللني بالوصل من سيدي
كمثلjust like تعليلthe soothing of الظماءthe thirsty العطاشthe parched
كمثل تعليل الظماء العطاش
Soothe me with hopes of union with my master,
Quench my thirst for connection, my lord
Soothe me with union from my master,
As parched, thirsty people are soothed.
Like quenching the thirst of the parched thirsty one
As one brings relief to the parched and thirsty.

فالحسنfor beauty فيهin him مستزيدever increasing وياشand [unclear reading]
فالحسن فيه مستزيد وياش
Do not let the eye stop at any limit,
Do not stop the eye on the ultimate goal
Do not let the gaze rest upon any final limit,
For beauty in him keeps increasing, and [unclear final word].
For in it, beauty continues to grow and thrive
For beauty in him is ever-growing and blooming anew.
