ومن أعاجيب الزمان التي
طمتoverwhelmed علىupon السامعthe listener والقائلand the speaker
طمت على السامع والقائل
And among the wonders of time that
Among the wonders of this age
Have overwhelmed the listener and the speaker:
That stunned the listener and speaker
رغبةdesire مركوبone who is ridden إلىtoward راكبa rider
رغبة مركوب إلى راكب
وذلةand the abasement المسؤولthe one petitioned للسائلbefore the petitioner
وذلة المسؤول للسائل
A ridden one's desire for a rider,
Is the zeal of the ridden to the rider
And the abasement of the one petitioned before the petitioner,
And the humility of the questioned to the questioner
وطولand the bounty مأسورa captive الىtoward آسرٍa captor
وطول مأسور الى آسرٍ
وصولةand the onslaught المقتولthe slain one للقاتلagainst the slayer
وصولة المقتول للقاتل
And a captive's bounty toward a captor,
And the length of the imprisoned to the imprisoner
And the slain one's onslaught against the slayer.
And the kindness of the murdered to the murderer
ماnot إنemphasis reinforcing negation سمعناwe have heard فيamong الورىhumankind قبلهاbefore it
ما إن سمعنا في الورى قبلها
خضوعsubmission مأمولone hoped for الىtoward آملone who hopes
خضوع مأمول الى آمل
Never before have we heard among humankind
Never before in this world
Of one hoped for submitting to one who hopes.
Did we hear of the submission of the hopeful to the hopeful
