Abu Marwan made his wives' vulvas available,
Abu Marwan allowed his women their freedom
Abu Marwan made the honor of his women free for all,
To obtain what he desired from the peerless fawn.
To attain what he desired of intimate joy
To attain the peerless young gazelle his heart desired.
فعاتبتهso I reproached him الديوثthe cuckold فيconcerning قبحugliness فعلهhis deed
فعاتبته الديوث في قبح فعله
فأنشدنيso he recited to me إنشادthe recitation of مستبصرٍa clear-sighted man جلدresolute
فأنشدني إنشاد مستبصرٍ جلد
So I reproached him, the cuckold, for the ugliness of his deed,
So the cuckold chastised him for his ugly deed
So I reproached that cuckold for the ugliness of his deed,
And he recited to me like a clear-sighted, resolute man:
And he recited to me repentantly and wisely:
Yet he recited to me with the poise of an enlightened, steadfast man:
لقدindeed كنتI was أدركتI attained المنىwishes غيرexcept أننيthat I
لقد كنت أدركت المنى غير أنني
يعيرنيreproach me قوميmy people بإدراكهاfor attaining them وحديby myself
يعيرني قومي بإدراكها وحدي
I had indeed attained my wishes, except that
I had realized my wish, if not for
"I would have attained my heart's desires, were it not that
My people reproach me for attaining them alone.
My people mocking me for realizing it alone
My kinsmen would shame me for enjoying them all alone!"
