I love conversation whenever he is mentioned to me

in it, and a fragrance of ambergris wafts toward me.

When he speaks, I listen to no one sitting with me,

except to his delightful, coquettish speech [reading شوى as سوى].

Even if the Commander of the Faithful were with me,

I would not, for his sake, feel constrained to turn away from him.

So if I rise from his side against my will, I do not

cease looking back, and walking is a painful thing.

My eyes are on him, while my body walks away from him,

like a drowning man watching for land amid deep waters.

I choke on water if I recall his distance,

like someone yawning amid dust and blazing heat.

[Text unclear; tentative fragments: and adorned; you recite; possible; toward the sky; recite.]

Melodies—and I surely know the place of the steps.
