And a day like a sword's edge—none could stand firm

against it, neither the hardy nor one who steels himself.

I faced its sharp edge while it was wine aflame,

and withdrew from it while it was everlasting glory.

    عَلَيهِنَّ سِربَالٌ مِنَ اللَّيلِ أكبَدُ

    Affairs collided like the waves of seas;

upon them lay a pitch-black robe of night.

I prepared for it a firmly built bridge of resolve,

and a lamp of judgment whose light blazes.

So I made their drowned ones disappear and illuminated their night,

and brought close all that had been distant among them.

I shall perish—is any living being on earth immortal?

And tomorrow will hand down, from my today and yesterday,

    وَمِنهَا عَلَى الدنيَا نِثَارٌ مُبَدَّدُ

    tales strung as a necklace around the neck of time;

and some are scattered pieces strewn across the world.

They have a white blaze, its mark upon the face of time,

and on the shoulder of days, a sword is slung.

And I sought a path where none accompanies me

among men save the virtuous man who steels himself.

So how base is a world I attained, when my fellow sharers

in it are vile men, grown toothless in foul deeds!

And how noble a state whose people are all eager seekers,

noble in their endeavors, yet each renounces excess.
