أطلعه الشمس كانت أم هي القمر
Oh, if only I knew who it was, and how she came by night!
I wish I knew who it was and how she walked by,
Was she the sun's visage, or was she the moon?
Did the sun rise on her or was it the moon?

Or a figure that took shape in my soul from my hopes,
For indeed, sight imagined it as it perceived it;
So that sight imagined her in its perception,

Or was none of this so, rather she was an event
That fate brought about as a cause of my death.
Brought by a cause to my destined end.
