And this is an ailment whose cure has baffled the physician;
An ailment has wearied the doctor from curing
It will surely lead me to the watering-place of my death.
It will surely bring me to the spring of my demise
رضيتI have consented بأنto the fact that أضحىI become قتيلone slain ودادهhis love
كجارعlike one swallowing سمpoison فيin رحيقfine wine مشعشعmingled with water
I have consented to become one slain by his love,
I was content to become a martyr of affection
Like one swallowing poison in fine wine mingled with water.
Like one who gulps poison in scintillating nectar
فماso what للياليwith the nights ماhow أقلlittle حياءهاtheir sense of shame
وأولعهاand how much more obsessed they are بالنفسwith the soul منthan كلevery مولعobsessed person
So what ails the nights? How little shame they have!
So why should nights be so shameless
And how much more obsessed with the soul they are than anyone obsessed!
And indulge the soul more than any indulgence

أعنتI helped علىagainst عثمانʿUthmān أهلthe members of الشيعthe factions
As though my time were a clansman of ʿAbd Shams, imagining
It's as if my time has deluded me
I helped the members of the factions against ʿUthmān.
Into siding with the Shia against Uthman
