وددت بأن ظهر الأرض بطن

وددت بأن ظهر الأرض بطن

وأن البطن منها صار ظهرا

وأن البطن منها صار ظهرا

I wished that the earth's back were its belly,

I wish the earth's back became its belly

And that its belly had become its back;

And its belly became its back instead

وأني مت قبل ورود خطبٍ

وأني مت قبل ورود خطبٍ

أتى فأثار في الأكباد جمرا

أتى فأثار في الأكباد جمرا

And that I had died before a calamity's arrival,

And that I died before any misfortune

Which came and stirred embers in the livers;

Came and ignited embers in my heart

وأن دمي لمن قد بان غسل

وأن دمي لمن قد بان غسل

وأن ضلوع صدري كن قبرا

وأن ضلوع صدري كن قبرا

And that my blood were washing water for the one who had departed,

And that my blood was shed for one exposed

And that the ribs of my chest were a grave.

And my ribs were like a grave or tomb
