أودك وُدّاً ليس فيه غضاضةٌ

أودك وُدّاً ليس فيه غضاضةٌ

وبَعضُ مودّات الرجال سرابُ

وبَعضُ مودّات الرجال سرابُ

I love you with a love in which there is no shame;

I wish you a cordial affection devoid of any pretense

yet some men's affections are a mirage.

For some men's affections are but a mirage

وأمحضنك النصح الصريح وفي الحشا

وأمحضنك النصح الصريح وفي الحشا

لودك نقش ظاهر وكتابُ

لودك نقش ظاهر وكتابُ

And I will give you sincere, frank counsel; and within my breast

I offer you sincere and candid advice, though in private

there is a clear inscription and a written record of my love for you.

My fondness for you is evident and manifest

فلو كان في روحي هواك اقتلعتهُ

فلو كان في روحي هواك اقتلعتهُ

ومزق بالكفين عنه أهابُ

ومزق بالكفين عنه أهابُ

Were my love for you within my soul, I would wrench it out,

If any passion for you lay in my soul, I would uproot it

and its skin would be torn away with both hands.

And with both hands tear off its covers

وما لي غير الودِّ منك إرادة

وما لي غير الودِّ منك إرادة

ولا في سواه لي إليك خطابُ

ولا في سواه لي إليك خطابُ

And I desire nothing from you but affection,

I desire from you nothing but affection

nor do I address you concerning anything else.

And my words to none but you are addressed

إذا حزته فالأرض جمعاء والورى

إذا حزته فالأرض جمعاء والورى

هباءَ وسكان البلاد ذبابُ

هباءَ وسكان البلاد ذبابُ

Once I have gained it, the whole earth and humankind

If it departs, then the entire earth and all its inhabitants

are dust, and the inhabitants of the lands are flies.
