ما بالُه قد ذابَ من أشواقِهِ
What ails him, that he persists in keeping his head bowed?
Why is he so melancholy in his silence?
What ails him, that he has melted away with longing?
Why has he melted away in his yearnings?
ماnot ذاكَthat إلاّexcept أنّthat مَعشوقاًa beloved لَهُof his
ما ذاكَ إلاّ أنّ مَعشوقاً لَهُ
قدindeed مالَinclined مُنحرِفاًturning aside إلىtoward عُشّاقهِhis lovers
قد مالَ مُنحرِفاً إلى عُشّاقهِ
