She gave me to drink what the lips of speckled serpents spat out,
She intoxicated me with what her articulate lips poured,
And the edges of keen swords reproached me over her.
And her sharp blades reproached me.

War held me back from her, its fang set gnashing,
War distracted me from her, turning away its intensity,
And thunder's clang amid the roaring of lions.
And the rumbling of thunder amidst the howling of wolves.

How, then, could I reach her, a woman of Najd, when between us stood
How can I reach her, now Najd's stalwarts stand between us
Najd's outlaws on the backs of sturdy steeds?
With their excellent steeds and sharp swords!

Between us lay the remoteness of her abode and its distance,
The remote pilgrimage and its distance came between us,
And lions of thickets, and jinn of the sand tracts,
As did the howling storms, evil spirits and piercing cries.

And a fierce, jealous chieftain guarding her,
Passionate, angry men jealous over her, wearing helmets,
His sword-baldric long, his resolves unfaltering.
Their long sharp swords unsheathed, resolute.

Had I willed it, her tent would not have been far from me,
Even if pitched among the dim stars.
Though it reached the celestial stars.

And she would have had from me, astride a swimming steed all night,
For her, I spent the night riding a swift camel,
A proud man, defiant of injustice, of the house of Zalim.
Smelling the darkness, a son of darkness.

The dragging of spears over the earth would have kept her awake,
Her smooth spears kept me awake rolling on the ground,
In the hands of Azd's yellow-turbaned young men.
In the hands of Azd's gallant young warriors with yellow turbans.

Will the steeds, then, bring me to her, seeming like
Will the steeds convey my message, as if
Their own reins from long chewing on their bits?
I had freed them from the fetters that hinder them?

And ensure food for the aged vultures;
And feed on the prey of the voracious eagles!

Among those that stirred my eagerness for distant travel,
My she-camels of Lahyan blood surged for the water wells
And roused my foremost wing-feathers toward Fustat of Egypt.
And swayed towards my encampment in Egypt.

So I escorted the army of victory as one resolved to go,
I bade farewell to the victorious army,
And bade it farewell as one not severing ties.
A goodbye without unsheathing swords!

I almost went on without looking back at those I had left,
I almost turned away from those I left behind,
But what bent my resolves held me back.
But my resolute will brought me back.

Had I secured permission alone for myself,
Had I monopolized the permission myself,
I would have set out, heedless of a blamer's blame.
I would have proceeded heedless of critics.

I yearned for a day to which I could give its due,
I ventured forth until I fulfilled my promise,
So poets might learn how my rival fares.
So the poets would know my resistance.

I yearn for Egypt, for an hour at that spectacle,
I head to Egypt to behold the spectacle
For which those absent bite their thumbs.
That makes even the absent bite their fingertips in anguish!

If I do not behold its day to the fullness of my gaze,
If I cannot behold it with my eyes,
I shall behold it filling my hearing, filling my breast.
I will hear of it fully, amidst the drawing of swords.

And my soul has fashioned for me an image of the conquest,
My soul imagined victory for me,
And glimpsed it for me without a watcher's glance.
As if I saw it without a critic's glance.

Thus, when proof comes to the moral man,
That a thing will be, it becomes an inescapable certainty.
Of something that necessarily follows.

And gladdened my eye with the ocean-like armies.
And gratified myself with the green armies.

And I beheld among the champions of Hashim's dynasty
I found among the supporters of Hashim’s state
Mighty chieftains striving for Hashim's dynasty.
Young men striving for Hashim’s state.

To endure, as they endured, the scorching blast of hot winds.
To pray with them at dawn.

The shadows of fluttering, hovering banners gathered over!

The first vanquisher of an unjust tyrant.

Blood-stained spearheads and the avoidance of sins.
For he tended God's allies as a shepherd his flock.

Noble ones offered from noble souls.

The testimony of a righteous man, not of a sinner.

That, when recalled, will not shame them at great gatherings.
