Seeking glory by the path of swords

is an honor that comforts the noble soul.

Indeed, a mighty man's humiliation is a more dreadful sight

before his eyes than an encounter with death.

There is nothing but battle, the furrowing blow

within it, and the swift, snatching thrust.

    لستُ من قُبّةٍ وقصرٍ منيفِ

    I spring from a keen sword and a swift steed;

I am not from a dome and a lofty palace.

glory with flagging effort and an unwilling soul.

gaze, he turns away with a wounded eye.

night, and night how to cross the trackless wastes.

    فهي أعوانُ كلّ وَغْدٍ سخيف

    Indeed, the days of our age are foolish;

so they aid every base fool.

An age in which you, O Abū al-Jaʿr, live

is no treasure, inherited or newly acquired.

Indeed, an age in which you rose so high

is base in its calamities, vile in its vicissitudes.

Indeed, the goal you sought in the time of the

king is, to me, a far-off reach of estrangement.

Indeed, a judgment you turn over is tormented

by error in carrying through and holding back.

Indeed, an utterance you chew over resembles

you in its appearance of coarse harshness.

False in its claims, absurd in its meanings,

corrupt in arrangement, corrupt in composition.

    إنما تغتدي لرغْمِ الأنوفِ

    You do not set out at dawn to govern a kingdom;

you set out only to grind noses into dust.

You attained what you attained, not through sound reason

in your endeavors, nor through discerning judgment.

Spare Jaʿfar for me, Abū Jaʿfar; do not

strike his two days with savage calamity.

    فترَفَّقْ بالماجِدِ الغِطريف

    You are in the reign of the one dear to us;

so be gentle with the noble, highborn man.

And whenever you caw your foulest caw,

let it be elsewhere than above his familiar dwelling.

I fear only for him; so show the

generous, compassionate man the utmost compassion.

Al-Zāb is the garden of eternity; within it

his bounty lends lushness to its striped finery.

How could you pair yourself with him—a perfect full moon—

when you are to him the dragon of eclipse?

How could you accompany him with a base man's manners,

    unceasing in dryness and aridity?

How could you wager in the race on what

you possess of slackness and a sluggish reach,

and a resolve that views affairs, when they

offer battle, through a blinded eye,

and foulness swearing that you have never

been an ally of anything else, even for a day?

It is no wonder that you toyed with an age

whose eye sleeps, and with a pampered calamity.

And so every mighty lion has become

content with a thicket as his share of the times.

Indeed, in the caliphate's west there is an illness

that nothing but the mother of deaths can cure.

Indeed, within it is a branch of the Banū

    Marwān, foreshadowing every fearful affair.

Aḥmad, is a heart streaming with mingled poison.

    Abandoning two things, disavowing

a just imam and an upright faith.

It is not too much to ask of someone like you to

distinguish the noble from his inferior.

O Muʿizz of guidance, it suffices me that I

am your mountain towering above your enemies.

And whenever war's stars were kindled,

I was never other than the spears' fellow-rider.

    I forever harbor a liver

burning with love for you, and a trembling heart.

I am the very one who acknowledges bounty, should

a people deny deeds of kindness.

I have not fought the light of guidance with darkness,

nor the letters of the Qurʾān with distortion,

like this one lovesick for Jibt and

Ṭāghūt among them, and the wandering, infatuated lover.

Satire sought no hospitality until it slowly approached

you, O Jaʿfar, without a host.

If you hide yourself from my sight, what stratagem

have your eyes against the haunting phantom?
