ياO روضَgarden علمٍknowledge وياand O سَحابَcloud ندىًbounty
يا روضَ علمٍ ويا سَحابَ ندىً
لاmay ... not زِلتَyou cease to be لاmay ... not زِلتَyou cease to be عيشَناour life الرَّغداeaseful
لا زِلتَ لا زِلتَ عيشَنا الرَّغدا
O garden of knowledge, and O cloud of bounty,
O garden of knowledge and O cloud of dew
May you remain—may you remain—our life of ease.
You have always, you have always been our life of ease
يَتْرَىcomes in succession عليناupon us نَدَىbounty يديكَyour two hands كماjust as
يَتْرَى علينا نَدَى يديكَ كما
تَدافَعَsurged against one another الموْجُthe waves جالrolled فاطّرَداthen flowed continuously
تَدافَعَ الموْجُ جال فاطّرَدا
The bounty of your hands comes upon us in succession, as
Your hands rain dew upon us as
the waves surged against one another, rolled, then flowed on.
The waves surge and flow forth
عوّضناmay ... compensate us اللّهُGod منْfor سواكَanyone other than you ولاand may ... not
عوّضنا اللّهُ منْ سواكَ ولا
عوّضَناcompensate us منكَin your stead سيّداًa lord أبداever
عوّضَنا منكَ سيّداً أبدا
May God compensate us for anyone other than you, but never
May God compensate us for other than you
give us a lord in your stead.
And may we never be compensated for you, O master
أيَّwhat a هِزَبْرٍmighty lion كانَwas الهِزَبْرُthe mighty lion لقدindeed
أيَّ هِزَبْرٍ كانَ الهِزَبْرُ لقد
غادرَleft behind منكَin you الضَّرغامَةthe fierce lion الأسداthe lion
غادرَ منكَ الضَّرغامَة الأسدا
What a mighty lion that lion was! Indeed,
What an excellent companion was your companion
the fierce lion left a lion behind in you.
