وأفضَلَ النّاسِ من عُرْبٍ ومن عجَمِ
O best of those cloaked in glory and generosity,
O best of those clothed in glory and generosity,
And finest of people, Arabs and non-Arabs alike,
And most virtuous of people, both Arab and non-Arab,

والحِلمِ والعلمِ والآدابِ والحِكَم
O son of bounty, generosity, and lofty deeds together,
O son of munificence, dew, and gathered clouds,
And of forbearance, learning, refinement, and wisdom,
As well as wisdom, knowledge, manners, and discernment,

حَملْتُ عنك الذي حُمّلتَ من ألم
If the wishes I cherish were granted me,
If I were granted what I wish for,
I would bear in your stead the pain laid upon you.
I would bear the burden you have been made to carry,

And I would count it a favor you had won,
And I would consider it a victorious hand
Among favors, and the richest share of all,
From hands, and a most plentiful share,

وتسْتَبِلَّ إلى العَلْياءِ والكرم
So that you might go forth, your body healed and sound,
Until your body regains health and wellbeing,
And regain health for eminence and generosity.
And you turn to the most high and generous,

God knows that, since I heard of what
God knows that since I heard of what
Befell you, I have not closed my eyes for grief, nor slept.
Befell you, I have not shut my eyes in sleep,

Then I am driven into anxiety,
Thus I am pushed to restlessness,
And at other times I am drawn into sorrow.
And at times I am turned to despair,

I pray and at times conceal my face supplicating
Upon the dusty ground, in the deepest darkness.
Upon the ground in the darkness of night,

And how could I not? How can sickness step toward
And how could it not be so? For illness walks to
One in whose hands lies the cure for affliction and disease?
The one in whose hands is the cure for harm and illness,

Toward the noble hero whose eye has never gazed
To the noble one whom I have not seen
Save toward the greatest aspirations of all?
Look to any but the greatest of nobles,

Swiftest of the generous to the furthest bounds of honor,
He conducted himself with generosity to its highest meanings,
Yes—and keenest of them all in his mouth's blade.
Yes, and they are most resolute, drawing the sword of his mouth,

Enough! May you recover from pain, O son of noble lords!
Woe to you, O son of leaders, from the pain,
But no recovery for people of dark character,
But no woe to the unjust people of ill repute,

People who stripped themselves of refinement and donned
A people who cast off manners and donned
The mantles of baseness and the betrayal of pledges.
The perverse inclinations of vileness and betrayal of trusts,

Each an emaciated man, his intellect narrow-sighted,
From every breeder of foolishness in his mind,
Devoid of wit and stripped of understanding.
Empty of discernment, devoid of understanding,

He is like an idol, so far removed from discernment—
It is as if, after his intelligence, he is an idol
Yet breathing is not known to come from an idol.
From whom breathing is not known or expected,

May you ever, in generosity, trail the hems of bounty,
You have continually drawn the train of munificence generously,
In a blessing by no means scant among blessings,
In an unmixed blessing from blessings,

As long as the garden is embroidered or its threads are woven
Neither slumbered the meadow, nor did
By the hands of bright morning clouds with steady rains.
The hands of pouring clouds clad in mist disturb its expanse.
