Lo, thus let one who led an army give gifts,
He who led an army and gave advice contrary to the view of the leader has been rightly guided!
and advanced and withdrew by the Imam's counsel.
The gift of one who gave sincere advice is praiseworthy; he saw what the people could not see.

The gift of one who gave sincere counsel its due,
The cavalry should indeed be thus: adorned with gold and green.
and saw more clearly what others had not seen.
The horses should indeed avoid dullness: caparisoned, dragging the trains of the right, galloping, embroidered and gilded.

ألا هكذا فلتُجنَبِ الخيلُ ضُمَّرا
Lo, thus let plump white camels be brought,
You see them like young mountain gazelles, clad in striped Yemeni garments of springtime.
and thus let lean horses be led alongside.
They walk with the gait of singers, wearing the dress of singers with ornamentation.
مُرَفَّلَةًin trailing robes يسْحبنَthey trail أذيالَhems of يُمنَةٍYemeni cloth

ويركُضْنَ ديباجاً وَوَشْياً مَحبَّرا
Draped in flowing robes, they trail hems of Yemeni cloth,
Dragging the long trains of fine fabrics, teaching fabrics gracefulness.
and gallop in brocade and richly patterned embroidery.
So the embroidery cannot conceal the beauty of their frames; rather it conceals what is more beautiful to the eye.
تَراهُنَّyou see them أمثالَlike الظباءِthe gazelles عَواطِياًstretching up to browse

You see them like gazelles stretching up to browse,
You see every enchanting, languid-eyed one looking with the eyelashes of a fawn shaking off drowsiness.
clad at Yabrin in flower-bright spring.
How many say upon seeing them pacing gracefully: "Have they left a white mountain gazelle in Taima'?"
يُمَشِّينَthey walk مشيَthe gait of الغانياتِlovely women تهادياًswaying gracefully

عليهنَّ زِيُّ الغانِياتِ مُشَهَّرا
They walk with lovely women's graceful sway,
I cannot but think the meadow is swaying as it walks, nor see among the horses' croups a dappled grey.
wearing lovely women's conspicuous attire.
In the morning they set out dappled, brindled, pink-nosed, trim, loud-voiced, bay, chestnut.

فعلَّمْنَso they taught فيهنَّin them الحِسانَthe beauties تَبختُراstrutting
فعلَّمْنَ فيهنَّ الحِسانَ تَبختُرا
They trail the beauties' ample hems,
There are blacks whose darkness the night dresses completely so that it clothes the dawn in light.
and therein teach the beauties how to strut.
There are chestnuts and golden bays, greys and browns, and piebalds whose coat disputes the hue of wine without the wine making any claim but shamming.

فيَسْتُرَ أحلى منه في العين منظَرا
Let not embroidery conceal their beautiful markings,
Bristling, with ears pricked, shining brightly as if silks were spread over them.
and hide a sight lovelier to the eye than itself.
There are duns that when they meet a valley are as if they sniff musk and ambergris.

with the bright eye of a dark gazelle shaking a wild lote-tree.
what the eye sees is pleasing.

How many, seeing them gaze intently, have said:
I see forms that enslave the soul when found depicted; from each scene I entertain my gaze, learning that God's guidance is in all things seen.
Have they left any tawny gazelle at Tayma?
I avert my glance from every blemish, gentler to the eye of the beholder than seeing a blemish.

I never thought a garden could strut as it walked,
All the prey of men and beasts of the wild, none question which of them brought it.
nor that I would see Abqar upon horses' backs.
The white cranes wish they had its strength, and had not been given wings and pinions.

When they set forth, piebald and striped,
The oryxes of the desert wish they had been left to it, and with a glance had given sores and gashes.
rose-red and coal-black, rust-brown and sorrel,
But this guidance is for the best of Hashim's clan, and the superior of those exalted in station and pulpit.

yet clothed in shining dawn;

And loads it with carnelian like embers giving light, its saddle glittering green.

And decorates it with pearls created for it, more radiant and lustrous than them.

and a dark bay that disputed wine's own color,
How many pearl necklaces like Pleiades are suspended, increasing its beauty when it shakes!
which wine claims only in fierce defiance.
And how many ears of swimming creatures have become, attached to them, the kingdom of Chosroes and Caesar!

White-stockinged, white-blazed, radiant and pure,
Adorned with what exhausts time in value, prancing about proudly.
as though Egyptian linens were spread upon them;
For this it is saddled to plunge into the depths, rending dragons and lions.

steeped to their fetlocks in musk and ambergris.
Therefore you see this happy one bedecked, and that dark-eyed one equipped.

It gladdens my eyes to see such qualities in them,
When its coat of mail becomes a roof shading it, the clouds pour for it thick rain.
and no wonder that the eye admires what it sees.
It is worthy of these gifts, for he named it, described it, adorned and arrayed it.

I see forms whose like enslaves the soul,
He lodged it in the highest pavilions, palaces, appointing it the best land for its abode,
whether it encounters them or sees them pictured.
And diverted to it the purest water for its drink, pitching a pavilion for it every year,

I delight my gaze with them, each a witness
And erecting for it in every lofty place a station. These first gifts were a foretaste, like the early rain for a village;
that God's signs are in everything He created.
Had he not hurried some without others, the earth and water would have been too narrow as paths and crossings.

And the she-camels of Qina passed in waves, and the warrior-mares of Najd a clamorous sea,

The sand-dwelling oryx wishes she were left to him,
The battalions have derived from him their dashing leader, facilitating righteous deeds.
and at his slightest glance would yield a fawn.
The kingdom has gained from him - whether a cutting sword, arrow, paper, or amnesty - what it desired.

Lo, they are gifted only to the best of Hashim,
I have not found man other than the product of his endeavor; he who strives more attains greater glory.
the finest man to mount a steed or pulpit;
Through lofty ambition one ascends on high; he who seeks the heights lags not behind.

Though they were stars of their age, we saw the sun more splendid and luminous.

They have been cut down in silence and their dwellings emptied, their traces effaced.

They became a feast for the predatory birds amidst joy, and the vultures alighted because of them.

fittingly—though they were more splendid and precious than these.
Your armies split them at the Ajnādayn Pass, spending the night of the Ajnādayn with them as the object of their delight.

Passions, intimates, relatives, comrades, columns; lovers I wish for them the race-course.

They reversed time: morning is night, and darkness day.

They wear adornments whose price would exhaust an age,
They journeyed, so their brows darkened the suns, and the stars paled beside their clouds.
and strut in them with pride and haughtiness.
They alighted, until dew was ashamed, and rain felt shy before their water-skins.

When they smiled, the land blossomed, and verdure burst forth in its meadows.

When they were cross, the dusty fog submitted, and the clamorous dung beetles yielded.

and sometimes reeking blood, red.
You are God's beloved, His progeny, His caliphs on His land, the righteous ones.

If it is said, "who are the best of creation?" none but you are indicated.
it casts over them a towering cloud of shade.
Were you to touch the boulder, it would gush springs and rivers.

The horizon almost boasted against the heights when you were shaded by its canopy.

land and water would have been too narrow as roads and passageways.
The sea and the whale bear you witness, as do the towering heavens, sun, moon, stars.

The horizons were ennobled through you, sustenances divided for you, lifespans and deaths.
