Death has proved true, and life has lied.

Admonitions have grown grave, and warnings have gone to their utmost.

We have, in the hopes within our souls,

length, but in our lifetimes, brevity.

We would see our own deaths with our eyes,

if only minds would take heed.

Among our afflictions is that what is present

is our eyelids, while thoughts are absent.

And when we examine our bodily organs,

the dullest of them are the eye and sight.

    If minds had an examiner,

hearing and sight would not be counted among them.

Which life is sweetest to live,

once I know that I am human?

By God's life, our tongues were struck dumb

    when Fate spoke above us.

Will the glory of a man of Yemen avail me,

his white fetlocks, good fortune, and forehead blazes,

and my speech, whose wandering strains are borne abroad,

and my tongue, a keen, hard-steeled sword?

    لا مَلجَأٌ منْها ولا وَزَر

    Behold, it is a cup I choke upon;

there is no refuge from it, no shelter.

Shall we leave the days to do what

they please, and not strike back and prevail?

Why not have our spearheads in our hands

when we thrust them forward and they clash?

Then cast aside the spear-shafts and throw away the grooved sword:

neither bright swords nor brown spears are useful.

A world that gathers us, while our souls

lie scattered, utterly dispersed beneath its decrees.

we see full well how it plots.

its lapses and its minor faults are immense.

And the lion is his mane and forearm,

and his two defenses, fang and claw.

lies an unrequited blood-debt, or blood spilled unavenged.

He is feared for the daughters of his fury—

if only he would pardon when he has power!

I swear: tomorrow's dawn will not endure,

bright-breaking, nor will the coal-black, murky night.

The radiant stars will perish even as they rise,

and the two luminaries, the sun and the moon.

strung together, they will surely scatter.

which neither tears nor rain deny!

from visiting it at evening and coming early.

not the poised, sleek steeds and camel herds.

while her father's sons are the radiant stars.

Indeed, she who emptied their den

now dwells where the rending lion is:

he who tamed the world and made it firm,

until sheep and leopard could meet.

knowledge of what to undertake and what to leave.

    Until she departed without complaint,

no desire of hers remained in this world.

the returning shade draws it back, and it recedes.
