O master of ready wit in speech, have there not been enough

flashes of insight in this undoing and binding?

Your judgment unveils the hidden in every calamity,

like the sun lifting the veil of every darkness.

And so our eyes and hearts see you

like a meteor above the very crowns of heads.

How numerous the names, when I count them—

such as 'noble lord,' 'generous chief,' and 'valiant hero'!

But when you return to the truth, it is only

you whom the tongues of peoples mean.

So leave the poets a single idea

from what the whisperings of fancy stir up.

For you and the proud lords from whom you spring—

each broad of reach, radiant-browed, and exalted—

are people of noble lineage, eminence, and elo-

quence, intellect, understanding, and clear explanation.

Eloquence walks behind you and before you,

and what you tread on with your feet grows fragrant.

And your land almost sprouts grass through your words,

if ever land could sprout grass through speech.

How could I deny your excellence, even if I were

like Abu ʿUbada or Abu Tammam?
