And every life goes toward an end.

Nothing deceives a soul except itself,
And naught deludes a soul but itself,
And a young man's lifespan is made of his hopes:
And the youth's life is but the youth's hopes.

Shorter to the eye than a glance,

And swifter to the ear than 'this' and 'no'.
And faster in hearing than one who says "aye."

Yet I never saw the prudent man
He sees, filling both his eyes, what cannot be seen.

The seeing eyes are nothing but hearts;
For the sights are naught but the hearts,
As for the eyes, blindness dwells in them.
While the eyes in them are blind.

Scraped, thrown away, growing again, unswerving,
Swerving; they kill outright and cannot be warded off.
Deaf, unhearing, unknown.

And my hands have no coward's trembling?

It would have tried me to see what it would try.

Go in peace before the budding of desire
Whose beds it made restless, so he complained.
And the restless bed complain of his return.

So he spent the night mistaking the Pleiades for al-Suha.
And thought the Pleiades slow to go down.

"Is the gleam in the drizzle or in the rain?"

ومنand through ذاكthat أضْنيتَyou wore out صرفَthe vicissitudes of الزمانTime
فلمand not يُخفِهِhid it عنْكَfrom you إلاexcept الضّنىwasting sickness
Through this you have worn out Time's vicissitudes,
But grief you could not cheat save by endurance.
And only wasting sickness hid it from you.
You did not sheath the sword till it bent;
فلمand not تُغمِدِyou sheathed السيفَthe sword حتىuntil انثنىit bent
ولمand not تصرِفِyou turned aside الرُّمحَthe spear حتىuntil انحنىit bowed
You did not sheathe the sword until it bent,
You did not turn your spear till it bowed.
Nor turn aside the spear until it bowed.
He whom you shielded with your outstanding valor,
وإنّand indeed الّذيthe one whom أنتَyou are صِنْوٌa twin لهto him

لمَاضيis surely unyielding in العَزَائمِresolve عَرْدُtough of النَّساthe sciatic sinew
The one whose twin you are
His resolves surpassed all resolves.
Is surely firm in resolve, tough of sciatic sinew.
He whitens your enemies when he avails himself;
يُبيرُdestroys عِداكَyour enemies إذاwhen ماever سَطَاhe strikes
ويُعرَفُand is recognized فيهمamong them إذاwhen ماever احتبىhe sits clasping his knees
He destroys your enemies whenever he strikes,
He is known among them when he conceals himself.
And is known among them when he sits clasping his knees.
He comes upon eyes of enviers

إذاwhen سألواthey ask مَنwho فتىًis a noble youth قيلit is said ذاthis one
He overwhelms the eyes of the envious;
When they are asked "Who is the youth?" and told "That one."
When they ask, 'Who is a noble youth?' they are told, 'This one.'
Sons of select mothers, sons of select fathers,
بنوsons of المنجِباتِnoble-bearing mothers بنوsons of المُنجِبينَnoble-begetting fathers
فمِنthus from مُجتَباةٍa chosen woman ومنand from مُجتَبَىa chosen man
Sons of noble-bearing mothers, sons of noble-begetting fathers,
Part of our mothers and our lineage is theirs
From a chosen woman and a chosen man.
If a king of ancient stock should rise among us.
لأمّاتِنَاto our mothers belong نِصْفُhalf أنْسابِنَاour lineages
إذاwhen المَلِكُthe king القَيلُthe qayl-ruler منَّاfrom among us انتمَىtraces his descent
To our mothers belongs half our lineage,
Our days' pillars are in their first stones,
When a king, a qayl among us, traces his descent.
And our fathers' equals are in their lofty fortresses.
دَعائِمُpillars of أيّامِناour days فيin الفَخارِglory
وأكْفاءُand peers of آبائِناour fathers فيin العُلىloftiness
Pillars of our days of glory,
Do you not see that they vie with us,
And peers of our fathers in loftiness.
Outdo us, and attain their goal?
ألمْhave not تَرَهُنّyou seen them يُبارينَنَاcompeting with us
فيَمرُقْنَنَاthen outstripping us ويَنَلْنَand reaching المدىthe goal
Have you not seen them competing with us,
They guaranteed us shade from tents
Then outstripping us and reaching the goal?
And they guaranteed us shade from spears.
كفَلنَthey guaranteed لناfor us بظِلالِthe shelter of الخِيامtents
وأكفَلنَنَاand made us guarantors بظِلالِof the shelter of القَناspears
They guaranteed us the shelter of tents,
In the morn their ears and eyes are ours,
And made us guarantee the shelter of spears.
And in the evening amid throngs of warriors.
وتغدوand at morning comes فمنهنّthus from them أسماعُناour hearing
وأبصارُناand our sight فيin حِجالِthe curtained chambers of المهاthe oryx
At morning, from them comes our hearing,
Had my judgment prevailed on the ancients
And our sight, in the curtained chambers of oryx.
And I sized the shares of this world,
فلوْand if جازَwere to prevail حكميَmy judgment فيamong الغابرينَthose long gone
وعدّلْتُand I adjusted أقسامَthe divisions of هذاthis الوَرَىmankind
If my judgment could prevail among those long gone,
I'd name some womenmen,
And I adjusted the divisions of this mankind,
And name some men women.
لسمّيتُI would surely call بعضَsome النساءwomen الرجالَmen
وسمّيتُand call بعضَsome الرجالmen النساwomen
I would call some women men,
If she unveiled hardships to strike down,
And call some men women.
How then her boys to fling the spears?
إذاif هيshe كانتْwas fit لكشفِfor dispelling الخطوبِcalamities
فكيفَthen how would be البنونthe sons لضَرْبِat striking الطُّلىnecks
If she was fit to dispel calamities,
She turnedaside, grand, for kings,
How must her sons be at striking necks!
Either Mustafa's son or else Murtaza's,
تولّتْshe departed مُرَفِّلَةًbestowing trailing robes للملوكِupon kings
فمنthus some مصطفىchosen in النجلoffspring أوor مرْتضَىwell-approved
She departed, bestowing trailing robes on kings:
And most of her hopes were in you both,
Some with chosen offspring, others well-approved.
While in her heart hot coals from your absence burned.
وأكثرُand most of آمالِهاher hopes فيكماare in you two
وفيand in القلبthe heart منهاsome of them كجمرlike the embers of الغضاghada-wood
Most of her hopes are in you two,
She attained what she wished. Cease
And some lie in the heart like ghada embers.
To stint what remains of her wishes to her.
فقدfor already أدركتshe attained ماwhat تمنتshe wished فلاso do not
تضيقاyou two withhold عليهاfrom her بباقيregarding the remainder of المنىhopes
She has attained what she wished; so do not
But for the tomb she would call you both
Withhold from her the hopes that remain.
To guard you from the gloating of enemies.
فلولاand but for الضّريحُthe tomb لنادتكماshe would surely call you two
تُعيذُكماinvoking protection for you two منfrom شماتِthe gloating of العِدىenemies
But for the tomb, she would call to you both,
Either you add to her company
Invoking protection for you against the enemies' gloating.
Or ward off ruin from her.
فإمّاso either تَزِيدانِyou two increase فيin أُنسِهاher solace
وإمّاor else تَذودانِyou two ward off عنهاfrom her البِلىdecay
Either you two increase her solace,
For the living may laugh at their dead's eminence
Or you ward decay away from her.
And their greatest quake in the grave.
فقدfor indeed يُضحكmay make smile الحيُّthe living سنّthe teeth of الفقيدِthe departed
فتهتَزُّso stir أعظُمُهhis bones فيin الثرىthe dust
The living may bring a smile to the departed's teeth,
Seek as you will the sign of nobility;
So that his bones stir in the dust.
Its proof is accord between passion and will.
ومهماand whenever طلبتَyou seek دليلَthe proof of الكرامِthe noble
فإنّthen indeed الدّليلَthe proof ائِتلافُis the harmony of الهوَىaffection
Whenever you seek the proof of noble souls,
You are the right hand: act with the left!
The proof is harmony of affection.
No hand suffices without another.
وأنتَand you are اليَمينُthe right hand فَصُلْso strike بالشمالwith the left
فماfor not بيَدٍfor one hand عنwithout يدٍanother hand منany غنىsufficiency
You are the right hand: strike with the left,
Not spears but with swords,
For no hand can do without another.
Not pillars but with building high.
وليسَand are not الرّماحُthe spears بغيرِwithout السيوفِthe swords
وليسand are not العِمادُthe pillars بغيرِwithout البِناthe building
Spears are nothing without swords,
Who calls no brother by name
Nor pillars without a building.
Is neither feared nor held dear.
ومنand whoever لاnot يُناديcalls أخاًa brother باسمِهِby his name
فليسthen is not يُخافُfeared ولاnor يُرتَجَىlooked to with hope
Whoever does not call a brother by his name
Is neither feared nor looked to with hope.
