I declared myself innocent to the lute of the wrong I had done it;
I declared myself blameless before the tanbur for what I did
if that was an offense, the very intent behind it came from the lute.
to it; and if I do wrong, the deliberate intent comes from it.

Was I anything but like one untouched by passion,
And was I not like one free from love,
who struck a dove of the grove while it warbled?
who struck the grove’s doves while they sang?
