وبنتِand a daughter أيْكٍof a grove كالشبابِlike youth النَّضْرِfresh
وبنتِ أيْكٍ كالشبابِ النَّضْرِ
كأنّهاas though she were بينَamid الغُصُونِthe branches الخُضْرِgreen
كأنّها بينَ الغُصُونِ الخُضْرِ
And a daughter of the grove, like youth in its freshness,
Like the freshness of youth is the daughter of Aik
As though she, amid the green branches, were
As if she were among the green branches
جَنانُthe heart of بازٍa hawk أوor جَنانُthe heart of صَقْرِa falcon
جَنانُ بازٍ أو جَنانُ صَقْرِ
قدalready خلّفَتْهleft it behind لَقْوَةٌa she-eagle بوَكْرin a nest
قد خلّفَتْه لَقْوَةٌ بوَكْر
The heart of a hawk, or the heart of a falcon,
A garden of Bas or a garden of Sakr
Left behind by a she-eagle in a nest.
Left behind by a mighty tribe of Bakr
كأنّماas though مجَّتْshe spat out دماًblood منْfrom نَحرِa throat
كأنّما مجَّتْ دماً منْ نَحرِ
أوor نشأتْshe grew فيin تُرْبةٍsoil منof جمرembers
أو نشأتْ في تُرْبةٍ من جمر
As though she had spat blood from a throat,
As if blood had flowed from her slaughter
Or grown in soil of embers,
Or she was raised in ashes of embers
أوor رَوِيَتْshe drank her fill بجَدْوَلٍfrom a stream منof خمْرٍwine
أو رَوِيَتْ بجَدْوَلٍ من خمْرٍ
لوif كفَّwithheld عنهاfrom her الدهرُTime صَرْفَthe vicissitudes of الدهرTime
لو كفَّ عنها الدهرُ صَرْفَ الدهر
Or drunk her fill from a stream of wine.
Or watered with a stream of wine
Were Time to spare her its vicissitudes,
If time would stop its course for her
جاءتْshe came بمثلwith the likeness of النَّهْدِthe breast فوقَabove الصَدرِthe chest
جاءتْ بمثل النَّهْدِ فوقَ الصَدرِ
تفترُّshe smiles عنto reveal مثلِthe likeness of اللِّثاتِthe gums الحُمرred
تفترُّ عن مثلِ اللِّثاتِ الحُمر
She would appear like a breast upon a chest,
She would have breasts above her chest
Smiling to reveal the likeness of red gums,
Baring teeth like red pearls
فيwith مثلthe likeness of طعمthe taste of الوصلreunion بعدafter الهجرِestrangement
في مثل طعم الوصل بعد الهجرِ
With a taste like reunion after estrangement.
With the sweetness of reunion after separation
