    أنّا نُؤلِّفُ شَمْلاً ليس يَفترِقُ

    Tell Rabi'ah, on behalf of this clan of Yemen,

    that we form a union that does not break apart;

    that we and you are two branches of noble stock,

    both blessed, with fruit and leaves flourishing.

    So our ways on battle's day are no disparate paths

    of differing stock; nor are our desires split into factions.

    Indeed, the days of glory are ennobled by us,

    until our enemies say that we are the dawn.

    So you are the rain, its crests surging

    upon seekers of bounty, and we are the copious downpour.

    But our supreme lord, who is also yours,

    stands above kings, who, measured against him, are commoners:

    the giver of a thousand—yet they are purses of coin,

    and the piercer of a thousand—yet they are arrayed in ranks.

    His gifts arrive in many forms, not just one,

    as the sea's waves surge against one another and clash.

    يومَ الهِياجِ وفي خَيشومِهِ ذَلَق

    Among them is the Rudayni spear, its shaft swaying

    on battle's day, and its tip keen;

    and Mashrafi swords, lances, and the shields

    stacked up, woven hide armor, and rings of mail,

    أيّام شَيبانَ فيه المِسكُ والعَلَق

    of every gleaming mail-coat, its gussets linked, from

    the days of Shayban, bearing musk and clotted blood;

    ظُباتها الجَمرُ لكنْ ليس يحترق

    and Masikhi bows, and true-striking arrows, in

    whose points are embers, yet these do not burn;

    بالبدو حيث التقى الركبان والطُّرُق

    and brocade, striped cloth, and tents he pitches

    in the desert, where riders and roads converge;

    للجودِ أبوابُها والوَفْدُ يَستَبق

    and the red sandalwood pavilion has opened

    its doors to bounty, while delegations race one another;

    سامي المُشَيَّدُ والمكمومةُ السُّحُق

    and water, and a garden thick with groves, and the

    lofty, well-built edifice, and tall palms with sheathed blossoms;

    and Shadqami camels, dark-hued in their resting places,

    as though they were dusk amid well-watered, pasture-rich land.

    And among his gifts are fluttering banners,

    and chargers racing one another into battle,

    and lordship for all time, and the wide world, and the

    outspread earth, and the sea, and the horizon.

    The piercer of lions whose jaws gape wide,

    and leader of horses whose flanks are lean,

    abundant in forbearance, much forgiving, quick to do

    good, armored in prudence and girded with it.

    It is as though his enemies were captives of his snares,

    so neither ravine nor tunnel can shield them.

    Now, by your face, which is the rising sun,

    indeed, in you both form and character have reached perfection.

    So dwell in the heights, Abu al-Faraj; never have they united

    save in love of you—the desires and the factions.

    If your bounty were in the hands of evening rainclouds, they would not

    cease until drowning overtook all the people.
