لاnot بالحُداةِby the camel-drivers ولاnor الركابِthe riding camels رِكاباas riding camels
How dear are those domed canopies—canopies indeed!
I love your domed abodes, not out of greed
Not the camel-drivers, nor the camels as camels.
Nor to ride upon noble steeds, but to bleed

Within them are lovers' hearts; you would think them
Within them are hearts of lovers, their haven
red ʿanam fruit in fair women's hands, and jujubes.
Held by hands so fair that pale all roses red

My father be ransom for those wild oryx-maidens! I sent after them
By my folks I swear, chasing it has left me
a sigh that escorted their pale camels and never returned.
Breathless, till my soul itself was nearly dead

By God, were it not that passion would make me foolish
And by God, if madness didn’t make me foolish
and some speaker say, 'He is playing the youth,'
And the gossipers said I had lost my head

I would have broken her armlet with the tightness of my embrace,
I would clasp that lithe form till breath itself was crushed
and sipped sweet saliva from her cool mouth.
Drinking from those lips the sweetest wine till drunk

You departed; were it not that I would change my locks
You made me thus, else I would not have changed
in vain, and meet you angry with me,
And brought blame upon myself, rage self-sprung

I would have dyed a false grayness into my sideburns,
I would redden white hair with henna's youthful facade
and erased youth from them as one erases ink.
And erase the blemishes of time, make my past slide

Cast off respectability, all bonds undone
and exchanged its robe for another robe.
Layer upon layer, all masks aside

And dyed the blackness of my mourning for you,
And in mourning attire my hair blackened well
if only I could find whiteness as a dye.
If only white henna was available to tell

And if you wish to visit gray old age,
And if you wish to make amends for the grey
make long ages your mounts to reach it.
Then make your walking stick your wings, your transport repel

Then you will surely take a dove from Time,
So take from time a dove, and to time a crow return
and surely give a raven back to Time.

It gathered foes and split lovers clean in half
which gathered enemies and scattered loved ones?

Nothing but this fool, verbose, insane
any king of pure worth save this radiant one.

This is he who has grown too great for his names,
He who would not be called Jafar
until we supposed them merely titles for him.
Would now be called Jafar the Magnanimous of Fame

He who will not consent to be called Jaʿfar
Bestowing troops of prizes and retinues on horseback racing
until he is called Jaʿfar the Bestower.
As if striking the sky itself to make a dome

He bestows battalions laden with booty, and oryx-maidens
Or raising the stars themselves as tents
seated behind their riders, and purebred Arabian steeds.
He attained the means to reach those heavenly heights

It is as though he pitched the sky as a pavilion
And after them shall seek even loftier flights
in al-Zab, or raised the stars as domed canopies.
Dawn itself wore saffron-gold raiment from his essence

He has gained means of ascent to their celestial spheres,
And the clouds were watered till they dropped their rains
and will seek further means beyond them.

Morning, through him, has donned a radiant morning,
And marvelled greatly at such a wondrous sight
and his virtues have watered the clouds with clouds.
I know not how, except that his affair has confused me so

The clouds' downpour spent the night stealing dew
And the changes of his state have struck me rainbow
from his palm; I saw a wonder in it.
With which finger did he encircle, without any fear

قدindeed رابَنيit troubled me منabout أمرِهِits conduct ماwhat رابَاcaused doubt
I did not know how that could be, save that I
Of their swaying, as if immune from hellfire and iron spear
was troubled by something troubling in its conduct.
He is the drowning man, and if he came between its wave

And around which fingertip did it circle without fearing
With the tumultuous sea frothing white and loud
a punishing lash upon it from that fingertip's might?
Resolute, while others take the pleasures and the souls
وهوَand it الغريقُis the drowned one لئنْif indeed توسّطَit entered موجَهاits waves

It would surely drown if it entered the midst of its waves,
So it’s as if he is the crooked moon wandering the sky
while the sea heaves and pours forth its surge.
I did not think to see a mortal man like this
ماضيunwavering in العزائمِresolve غيرُهothers besides him اغتَنَمَwon as booty اللُّهَىriches

Unwavering in resolve—others won riches
A raging lion without need for coat of mail or armor dress
in war, but he won souls as plunder.
A flower, scattering its petals with hands generous and open
فكأنّهso it is as though he والأعوَجيَّand the Aʿwaji steed إذاwhen انتَحَىhe charges

It is as though he, with the Aʿwaji steed when he charges,
Willing to accept whatever comes, appeased in its redress
were a moon guiding a meteor by the rein.
Were it not for his restraints and steely calm control

I never thought to see a mortal so
The Arabs would not glory in their heroic roles
lionlike, nor armor called a forest:
His praise made joyful every mouth and face
وَرداًa tawny lion إذاwhen ألقَىhe lays علىupon أكتادِهِhis shoulders

a tawny lion, when he casts upon his shoulders
It is for this we find the frontiers have become whole
a mane, and grinds a fang against a fang's edge.
If doubt cleaved my heart to test his friendship true

ورَضينَand they accepted ماwhat يأتيhe does وكنّand they were غِضاباangry
The lions' paws laid their cheeks flat before him,
It would find naught within but faithfulness and fealty due
and they accepted what he did, though they were enraged.
Before your call I would wander, rejecting all

But for his protective zeal and formidable mettle,
Sipping the mirage, knowing reality's promise untrue
the fierce Arabs would not have been fierce.
No land brought me closer to you, rather

The sweetness of praise of him has sweetened mouths,
I came to the skies and found its gates ajar
and that is why we find lips sweet.
And saw around me delegations of every tribe

If testing my love for him laid my heart open,
I thought Iraq itself was groaning from the numbers there
you would find a veil made of my heart over him.
A land I trod, trampling its pearls now dust
قدindeed كنتُI used to قبلَbefore نَداكَyour bounty أُزجيdrive onward عارضاًa raincloud

Before your bounty, I used to drive a raincloud onward,
Its musk now earth, its gardens now a barren crust
and watch its thin, gleaming cloud disperse.
And heard within every sermon of victory and might
آليتُI swore أصدُرُI would depart عنfrom بحاركyour seas بعدماafter
قِستُI measured البحارthe seas بهاagainst them فكنّand they were سراباa mirage
I swore to depart from your seas, after
I thought its kings themselves were now all Bedouins, a must!
I had measured the seas against them, and they proved mirages.
And saw its mountains bow down before your rule
لمnot تُدْنِنيbrought me near أرضٌany land إليكَto you وإنّماbut rather

No land brought me near to you; rather,
As if extending their necks to you in prostration, overawed
I came to heaven, and its gates were opened.
I asked, why is there no grey hair of time?
ورأيتُand I saw حوليaround me وَفْدَthe delegation of كلّevery قبيلةٍtribe
حتىuntil توهّمتُI imagined العراقَIraq الزّاباal-Zab
And I saw around me the delegation of every tribe,
For your might had restored their youth once more
until I imagined Iraq to be al-Zab.
The Prophet back then crushed the factions by your ancestors’ aid
أرضاًa land وَطئْتُI trod الدُّرَّpearls رَضراضاًas pebbles بهاin it

A land where I trod pearls as pebbles,
The Imam again closed the frontiers, victories made
and musk as soil, and gardens as its surrounding grounds.
If I said pure white steeds were created just for you

And there I heard every decisive oration,
I would have spoken true, be not afraid
until I thought its kings were Bedouins.
You who don the crown of glory and nobility

فحسِبْتُهاso I thought them مدّتْto have stretched إليكَtoward you رِقاباnecks
I saw the mountains of its land bowing in submission,
When the best of stock and lineage are arrayed
and thought they had stretched their necks toward you.
If kings themselves copied your abodes

I asked why Time there was gray-haired,
Then for long they would stand guard at your doorways
and found it had turned gray from the terror of your might.
Will Rabi'ah ever thank you for the horses you granted?

The Imam secured the frontiers through you, and before him
Will the Red Bani Hamr praise you, by you gladly swayed?
the Prophet routed the Confederates through your people.
You gave honor to the best of every noble house

If I said that keen-edged, gleaming swords were not
By placing it in kinship next to your names alight
created for anyone but you, I would speak truly.
You gave them this full moon whose lineage is known

You are the bearers of crowns from Yemen, when
So how can others claim nobility as their right?
nobility is reckoned by lineage and stock.
You spoke and silenced every speaker, amazed to hush

If kings take your palaces there as their model,
Reached the limits of eloquence and every heartrush
they have long served as their chamberlains.
I swear if I part from you yet you still remain

Will Rabiʿat al-Faras give thanks—she whom
Beloved you shall always be, e'en if we turn to dust
you have favored in coming and going?
And if the lands themselves were planted with your seed

All would doubt me and confuse me for a liar decreed
lineage through nearness to your lineages.
I give you these realms called the world's expanse

You spoke, and a speaker was silenced; you fell silent,
To render speech itself confused, solutions delayed
yet attained fullness and expansiveness of speech.
And if you rise beyond conjectures and their claims
أقسمتُI swore لوif فارقتُمُyou left أجسامَكمyour bodies

Then you have entered the unseen, gate after gate lain
you would remain beloved after them.
God will not leave oppression by your hand unjusticed

you would dwell in virtues and refined manners.
I do not marvel at your seas, since I measured them all

And found them then mirage, not truth but a call
I told him of his qualities, he would doubt it.
But I do marvel at Fate and its mysteries ancient

Yours are these living souls that are called mankind;
Did it know the full count of all you were given at all?
so command and be obeyed, and call and be answered.
I summarized praise, for I found no end

If you were not the most eloquent speaker in peace,
And feared rambling, leaving understanding distend
your sword would suffice to return an answer.
The sin is praising one so far beyond all reach

Though you have passed beyond conjectures and their guesswork,
What man can claim to have struck the mark on this bend?
you have indeed entered the unseen, gate by gate.
Give me the honesty of one admitting their flaws

God will not let your hand's wrong against riches go unanswered
And blame me like a foe who has transgressed sacred laws
until He sends down a book concerning requital.
For I am the penitent, and you the paragon

Who knelt praying before, all worldly wants withdrawn
measured the seas against them, and they were mirages.

إنيindeed I اختصرْتُshortened لكfor you المديحَthe praise لأنّهbecause it
لمdid not يَشْفنِيsoothe me فجعلْتُهُso I made it إغباباintermittent
I have shortened my praise for you, because

والذّنْبُand the fault فيis in مَدْحٍpraise رأيتُكَI saw you فوقهُabove it
أيُّwhich of الرّجالthe men يُقالُis said فيكَconcerning you أصاباto have hit the mark

هَبْنيregard me كذيas the man of المحرابthe sanctuary فيكconcerning you ولُوّميand my reproachers
كالخصْمِas the disputants حينwhen تَسَوّرُواthey scaled المِحراباthe sanctuary
Count me, concerning you, as the man of the sanctuary, and my reproachers
as the disputants when they scaled the sanctuary.
فأناfor I المُنيبُam repentant وفيهand in him أعظمُthe greatest أُسْوةٍexample
قدalready خَرّhe fell قبليbefore me راكعاًbowing وأناباand repented
