سَقّنيgive me to drink الخمرَthe wine بعَيْنيَby the two eyes of قاتليmy slayer
سَقّني الخمرَ بعَيْنيَ قاتلي
لاlet not يُلاقيexperience منكfrom you مثليone like me عَطَشاthirst
لا يُلاقي منك مثلي عَطَشا
Give me wine, by my slayer’s eyes;
My killer eyes made me drink wine
Let not one like me suffer thirst at your hands.
None suffers thirst like me from you

صَنَعَformed المَزْجُthe mixing عليهاupon it حَنَشاa serpent
صَنَعَ المَزْجُ عليها حَنَشا
Is what I see in the cup foam, or
In the cup I see no loved ones
has the mixing formed a serpent on its surface?
Only bubbles the blender did produce

فإذا مَدَّ يميناً نَهَشَا
Its cupbearer spent the night like a snake-charmer,
Its pourer’s hands are snakes’ heads
and whenever he stretched out his right hand, it bit him.
When he extends his right, it bites

Do not say that he who enthralled me has begun to grow a beard;
Don’t excuse who cursed me
he has merely embroidered and embellished himself with my name.
He but embroidered my name and adorned

He has only traced upon his cheek
On his cheek he only etched
the like of what has been engraved on my ring.
What’s engraved on my ring’s stone
