أرجو زماناً والزمانُ حُلاحِل
Will any distant hope of mine come soon?
Is what I hope for nearer than what I await?
I hope for a time, though Time is a mighty lord.
I long for a time, yet time slides away.

The dearest lost thing is youth returned
The dearest of lost things is returning youth,
after it has gone, and a loved companion reunited.
After turning its back and parting.

How good is the world when united,
Yet she is the bereaved mother of sons.
Yet it is the mother who abandons her sons.

The nights have passed and estranged us,
the mother of nights and separation is bereaved.
Mother of nights and estrangement.

As though each day were chasing another day,
It is as if each day chases the next,
and each age were devouring another age.
And each era consumes the next.

Do my alternating youth and maturity sadden me,
This leaves me, and that departs.
One leaves me, the other accompanies me?

The pale camels win no praise as they carry the canopied litters away;
The Pleiades do not travel west, shining,
rather, they are youth's departing season.
But it is the sunset of departing youth.

Wine is only what separation ages,
Wine is only what date palms and grapes release,
or its sister, which Babylon ages.
While wine from Babylon and serpents is fatal.

The blend in a cup of Babylonian wine is madness;
I passed the dwellings in anguish,
the blend in that other wine is the deadly blood of vipers.
With my companion who is not here asking about them.

I passed the dwellings at Man'ij;
The two encampments confronted each other,
they suffer what I suffer, except that I am the one who asks.
One in the hardy striking of swords, the other tranquil.

One erased the landmarks with shedding blood,
wearing two striped mantles, and this one still standing.
The other with a downpour and floods.

and incessant, torrential rain erased the other's.
The beads scattered and the strings broke.

The winds shed your wings' pearls
and the herd their company—except that these have calves.
As ornaments for the hills with aloes' fragrance.

If only you could be as you were, with gazelles
a breath they kept repeating and tears pouring down.
Grazing freely, and camels bleating playfully.

For that valley was a canal, and tongues recited poetry,
the tamarisks were ban trees, and the ruins were thickets?

As the bonfires spent the night kindled for a tribe,
gazelles in their coverts, lovely companions, and noblewomen.
With the son of Hayjaa chanting poetry.

When the courtyards spent the night with armor trailing
Morning cups and evening wine were passed around,
behind a son of battle, and a neighing horse standing poised,
With singing, declaiming, and passion.

Away with nights of sleeplessness for us, yet not

Nights of heavy cloudbursts for the few!

and justice and bounty smiled within it.
The implements of war, and the army its sheath.

and a spearhead of war, with the battalion for its shaft.

His two days are a decisive thrust in battle,
A hero, when he wished, adorned his lance
always, and a conclusive judgment in assembly.
With blood, while lances around him were idle.

A hero who, whenever he wishes, adorns his lance
He gave abundantly, belittling his gifts,
with blood, though the lance brought him was unadorned.
So dawns blushed and clouds bore them.

He gave lavishly, yet deemed his gifts small;
The name of the clouds is his, and he is like Kanahoor,
the rain-stars grew ashamed, though pouring down.
While the names of seas are his rivulets.

Beside him, the name of a cloud, even a towering one,
If not for the vastness of the horizons’ directions,
is 'mirage,' and the seas are named 'streams.'
The delights and virtues would not have room for him.

If this silent one does not awake
they could not contain his gifts and abundant favors.
From what I see, this patient one will perish.

hopes will dwindle, and no hopeful soul will be found.

Ambitions carry him, so eyes ambitious
and came as rain while the clouds were heedless.

Thunderbolts fell dumb before it.

It had from that blood a cleansing torrent.

And supernatural jinn obeyed his compelling cry.

the one charged with them is a seasoned, full-grown camel.
For the one who carries them has a strong back.

You marched despite a throng of mourners
as though your swift onset were a stealthy attack.
And a cloudburst, darkness, and slippery ground.

That caliphate has Hashim for its masters;
Torrents flowed with no shelter,
religion is its guide, and you its supporting shoulders.
And seas raged with no coast.

You marched on, and the clouds followed with their rain,
a day like yours, terrible to hear of?
As if, wherever you were, contending with you.

And your night-march, undeterred by a mourning rite's fury,
Proceeding, it was as if the rain spout of your coat of mail
its mourners trembling, its madness maddening,
Were hands extended, and your hands filled with bounty.

while deserts met falling rain,
Behind your sword, deadly sharp,
and dark paths met a pitch-black night,
And before it, an army whose positions are for God’s army.

ravines flowed that had no watercourses,
With horses neighing, riders handling lances,
and seas surged that had no shores.
The Ansaris competing and reconciling.

You advance, and the cloud follows with its downpour,
It was as if the plateaus wereeting you with blond spear shafts
as though competing with you wherever you are.
And the young camels with slender spear shafts.

And were returning to the heavens.

A surging host, with Yabrin and 'Alij within it,
The White Fort with you has sharp swords,
and the two rocky mountains, Mutali' and Muwasil.
And the line of Ghassan has flashing blades.

The lions, all lions with you, are horsemen,
and its mornings seem like late afternoons.
And all the land with you has judges.

and as though it were entering heaven.
And meteors change the horizons.

as though the horizons were thickets because of it.
With thunderbolts and joining flashes.

One blood like enduring rain, but this
and al-Khatt, from Ghassan, is supple lances within it.
Is wholly piercing, while that is a downpour.

and the earth—all the earth—is dust-clouds within it.
Some gush blood and others despair.

Birds that have no vanguards
and its dense masses transform the horizons.

As if supplied for them were shelters,
along its two flanks, and its lightning is blades.
And roaring camels bellowed for them.

all of it, is drizzle, while this is a torrent.
Swooping down on the puppets.

Like swooping eagles and arrows.

The zebras, plunging and rising steeply.

and as though their flanks were panting.
And the young camels their yearlings kept close.

Hollow-sided, they drink from death's basin,
The whiteness, the darkness,
as sandgrouse drink in the wastes, drinking their fill.
The brilliant and obscuring gloom.

Their peaks became as their bottoms.

Until you brought your force to rest upon the tents,
O Lord of the valley you once left
and their tops became their bottoms.
With its crickets singing mournfully!

How many a valley you left that day
You took it suddenly and burst open its hills,
with its inhabitants a flowing torrent within it!
So springs flowed beneath them.

Destroying its encampments and alarming the timid.

You trod between its gazelle covert and its lion's den;
You left it to die in its yards,
its lurking lion was struck, and its lone doe alarmed.
Truth, while hopes’ delusions are false.

You left it with death in its courtyards
Carrion-eaters wavered over it and wandered,
a certainty, and the delusion of hopes false.
While moaning doves and owls cried in lament.

Flanks and breastbones whistle over it,
Neither did fire kindle its chambers,
and cooing voices and bereaved mothers resound within it.
But your horses raced through, plunging in attack.

your steeds swept through it, galloping wildly.
Except your view in perplexities, every other erring.

the secret of what he seeks and attempts.

Without your hands, what is kingdom
haltered for their destination, and a departing tribe.

Sovereignty without your hands is only a loop
So let them leave your lofty path,

For you have a way between planets.

All the generous of the waste are only speakers
dragging his feet, while the shod flew over thorn-trees.
Of generosity, while you alone are its doer.

And the realm was then a swaying banner,

Borne by the winds, with none but you to carry it.

when none but yourself fought on your behalf.
And inherited your father’s sword, that resolver.

Days when no tribes were drawn to you,

You pursued your father's course, he being exalted,
You reddened it when scarcely a hand or fingers
and inherited your father's sword, it being a severing blade.
Could wield it, so ambitions stretched to encompass it.

nor its sword-straps shortened to fit you,
Was generous, but you guarantee every portion.

When resolved, every valley has heaps of dead,
without hand and fingers straining beneath it.
And when angry, every mountain pass is blocked.

When distant, everything is imperfect,
and great ambitions wielded it.
And when near, everything complete.

With his family, and every living thing is indebted to him.

When you are distant, everything is lacking;
If you were not virtuous, your numbers would not decrease,
when you are near, everything is complete.
Just as the solitary stars are few.
