    I say, as Yemeni lightning flashes:

    Is it a stream, or an Indian sword blade?

    And dawn hastens in the wake of its darkness,

    Like a raven that sped on, with a hawk following it.

    And the sun in the red raincloud—you would take it for

    A cheek enclosed by a purple veil.

    فالحب مني حجازيٌّ عراقيُّ

    In Baghdad I love one whose home is in al-Khayf;

    So my love is Hijazi and Iraqi.

    You contain noble qualities, and time contains you with them,

    Like the heart, which contains meanings yet is itself contained.
