He bent the slender branch over the tawny dune,
He leaned his spear against her fair thigh
and unveiled darkness over the radiant dawn.
And darkness fell upon the bright morning
أتميسُdoes it sway? قامتُهُhis figure ويعبَثُand toys طَرْفُهُhis gaze
بِدَمِيwith my blood كعاداتِlike the habits of الوَشيجthe spear-shaft الأَسْمَرِbrown
Does his figure sway, while his gaze toys
His stature is perfect and his glance mischievous
with my blood, as the brown spear-shaft is wont to do?
With my blood like the habits of a handsome black-eyed man

ماءَthe water of الشبيبةyouth صافياًclear لمnot يُعْصَرِbe pressed
The season of youth sent flowing for us through his body
Our youth has flowed purely through his body
the water of youth, clear and unpressed.
Water of adolescence, unpressed
وأَراكَand showed you منهfrom him الوَشْيَthe brocade فيin حُلَلِrobes of القَبَاCoptic linen (word begins here)
طيِّcompletion of 'Coptic linen' الجميلةِbeautiful فيin عَرِينِthe lair of القَسْوَرِthe lion
And showed you his brocade in robes of Coptic
And I see the blackness of mischief in him wearing the garments of charm
linen, lovely within the lion's lair.
The beautiful wrapped in the den of the bald eagle
وبداand appeared لماءِfor the water of الوردroses فيin أَبرادهِhis cloaks
ماwhat للحدائقbelongs to the gardens فيin الغمامِthe clouds الممطرrain-bearing
And for rosewater in his cloaks there appeared
And there appeared to the rose water on his carpets
what gardens have in rain-bearing clouds.
What the gardens have in the pouring rain

And beneath lips, in smiling mouths, he revealed
And there peeked beneath the pillows with smiles
pearls safeguarded in red agate.
A treasure hidden in red agate
فعلمتُso I learned لمَّاwhen خضتُI plunged فيinto بحرِthe sea of الهوىlove
أَنَّthat المراشفَthe lips منamong بحارِthe seas of الجوهرjewels
So I learned, when I plunged into the sea of love,
So I knew when I plunged into the sea of passion
that lips are among the seas of jewels.
That the pillows were from oceans of jewels
ماnot زلتَyou have ceased تبلغُyou deliver فيamong العُداةthe foes خَطَابةًoratory
والطِّرْفُand the steed منتصبٌstanding upright مكانَin place of المنبرthe pulpit
You have never ceased delivering orations among your foes,
You still reach the enemy with eloquence
while the steed stands in place of the pulpit.
Your gaze fixed where the pulpit stands
أَشْمَمْتَهُمْyou made them smell عَرْفَthe fragrance of الحِمامdeath بمِجْمَرٍwith a censer
كانتْwere رماحُكyour spears عودَthe incense-wood of ذاكthat المُجْمَرِcenser
You made them smell death's fragrance from a censer;
You smelled them the fragrance of doves with embers
your spears were that censer's incense-wood.
Your spears were like that ember
وبسطتَand you extended منfrom كفَّيكyour two palms عشرَten أَسنةٍspearheads
فيin الحربwar بلbut rather فيin السلمpeace عَشرةten أبحرِseas
And from your two palms you extended ten spearheads
And you have spread from your two hands ten blades
in war—but in peace, ten seas.
In war, no, in peace, ten seas
