    O rose of a cheek whose mole is ambergris,

    and eyelid-sheath whose sword is a dark eye!

    Your mole is no incense, nor is that which

    is stained red upon his cheek an incense-burner.

    Rather, it is the black of my eye, while

    red blood has overflowed in tears.

    وإنما يبعثُهُ المَحْجِرُ

    It is no Yemeni blade that sends death forth;

    it is the eye socket alone that sends it.

    I adjure you by God, O bough of the sand dune:

    will you never bear fruit through union with me?

    ووَصلكَ الصبحُ وما يُسْفِر

    Your estrangement is night, and it never lifts;

    and union with you is dawn, yet it never breaks.

    You were created as water, and passion has turned

    my body to fire; that is why you shun me.

    Had your teeth not rested in still,

    sweet water, we would have called them pearls.

    يكادُ فيه يَغْرَقُ المِئْزَر

    You stirred the wave of your haunches within a waist-wrap;

    the waist-wrap almost drowns in it.
