عَشَقْتُI loved الظلامَthe darkness وعِفْتُand I loathed الصباحَthe dawn
إذاwhen كانhad أَفْلَتَescaped منِّيfrom me قَنَصْquarry
I loved the darkness and loathed the dawn
When some quarry had escaped me.
كأنَّas though الدُّجَىnight's darkness وجهُthe face زنجيَّةٍof a Black woman
مليحٌbeautiful بداappeared الصبحُthe dawn فيهon it بَرَصْvitiligo
As though night's darkness were a Black woman's face—
Beautiful, with dawn appearing on it as patches of vitiligo.
