ولطيفةٍand a graceful woman فيin الرقصthe dance يُعْطَفُis bent قَدُّهاher figure
كتعطُّفِlike the bending of اليَزَنِيَّةِthe Yazanite spear السمراءِdusky
And a graceful woman whose figure bends in the dance,
With graceful dancing her neck gently sways
Like the bending of a dusky Yazanite spear.
Like a dark-skinned Bedouin girl as she plays
تختصُّis closely associated بالحركاتwith the movements منهاof hers سرعةٌa swiftness
كتخصُّصِlike the association of الأرواحthe souls بالأعضاءwith the limbs
A swiftness of hers is bound to her movements,
Her motions are swift, purposeful and light
As souls are bound to limbs.
As spirits that dwell in bodily sites
خَفَّتْshe was light فلوso if رقصتshe danced بأعلىupon the surface of لُجَّةٍa deep sea
ماnot بلَّwould wet أخْمَصَهاthe arch of her foot حَبَابُthe bubbles of الماءِthe water
So light is she that, were she to dance upon a deep sea,
So light are her steps, were she to dance
The water's bubbles would not wet the arch of her foot.
Atop the sea's crest, her feet the waves would not glance
