عزَّbecame elusive المنامُsleep فجفنيso my eyelid جائلُwandering الرَّمَقِthe gaze
وباتand spent the night قلبيَmy heart لاnot يشكُوcomplains سِوَىexcept الْحدَقِthe pupils
Sleep eludes me, and my eye casts restless glances.
Sleep eluded me, my energy drained,
And my heart spent the night complaining only of eyes.
My heart remained awake, only my eyelids complained.
كالخيزرانةِlike a bamboo cane ماnot لاحتْappeared لهاon it وَرَقٌleaves
إلاexcept منfrom الوَشْيembroidery بينbetween التِّبْرuncoined gold والوَرِقِand silver
Like a bamboo cane, no leaves have appeared on it
Like a palm tree with no leaves left,
Except those of embroidery, amid gold and silver.
Except some dry fronds amid dirt and debris.
فالغصنُso the bough ماnot ماسَswayed ريعانُthe bloom الشبابof youth بهِwith it
سُكْراًin drunkenness وغيرُand other than مدامthe wine الحسنof beauty لمdid not يَذُقِtaste
So youth's bloom has not made the bough sway
For the branch that youth did not touch,
In drunkenness; it has tasted no wine but beauty's.
Will remain sober, never tasting the wine of beauty.
