Whose are the charming maidens, who are gazelles,

And the fawns, whose veils are striped silk,

And the suns who have bent their branchlike forms,

Though no tawny wine has made their waists sway?

So honey and wine lay hidden in their figures,

And fire and water appeared in their cheeks.

    فهْيَ للسَّمْهَرِيَّةِ السَّمْراءُ

    She bends in stature and wounds with her glance;

Thus she is the dusky counterpart of the Samharī lance.

She came by night; the incense and fresh fragrant wood

Upon her, and her jewels, stood as watchmen.

And just before the maiden, a white blade, shimmering

Along its edges, and a green coat of mail.

And a youth shone above a powerfully built black steed,

A moon, with a dark night at his reins.

And armored warriors make the spearheads shine like shooting stars,

And their darkness is the ash-gray dust-cloud.

The keen blades return from their watering-place in heads,

As red as cheeks flushed by modesty.

Ah, may God curse the vicissitudes of a treacherous age,

In which the base have ruled over its noble men,

And a time we love, though we seem,

When it assails us, to be its enemies.

The noble are known by eminence, yet

    Eminence became known through al-Muwaffaq.

A noble man—if illness befell the nights,

In his judgment there would be a cure for them.

A palm never at rest from the demolition wrought by bounty,

With fingers that build the edifice of glory.

Thus he, while time is pitch-dark, utterly black,

Is a radiant white blaze upon its brow.

And if the east wind had some of his resolve,

It would lift the mountains, though a gentle breeze.

A mountain of forbearance: the earth stood firm through him when

A lofty summit of his towered high.

Mention of you is wine, and he who brings you to mind is a cupbearer,

And the ears seem to be the drinking companions.

So when praise of you is passed around unmixed,

Praise of you sets our frames swaying.
