هلْwill ...? أنتِyou فاديَةٌa redeemer فؤادَthe heart عميدِof a lovesick man
منfrom لوعةٍburning anguish فيin الصّدْرِthe breast ذاتِpossessing وَقُودِfuel
Will you redeem a lovesick man's heart
Are you my redeemer from the anguish in my heart, O pillar of my soul,
from anguish in the breast, with fuel to burn?
Or are you, in your deadly ways, not afraid of punishing the servants of God?
أمor أنتِyou فيin الفَتَكاتِdeadly assaults لاnot تخشَينَfear فيin
قَتلِslaying العبادِthe servants عُقوبةَthe punishment المَعبودِof the Worshipped One
Or, in your deadly assaults, do you not fear, in
If your swords do not refrain from wanton shedding,
slaying His servants, the punishment of the One they worship?
Then their sharp edges are not made of steel.
إِنif كَانَit is لاnot تَنبُوglance off سُيوفُكِyour swords عنfrom حَشاthe vitals
صَبٍّof a lovesick man فَلَيسَthen ... are not حِدادُهاtheir keen edges بِحَديدِof iron
If your swords do not glance off the vitals
Say, how can you show affection to a lover
of a lovesick man, their keen edges are not of iron.
When you do not grant him a glance of favor?
قُلْsay كَيفَhow تَعطِفُshe shows kindness بِالوِصالِwith union لِعاشِقٍto a lover
منshe who لاnot تجودُgives generously لهto him بِعَطْفَةِwith a turn جيدِof the neck
Tell me: how can she favor a lover with union,
Had I clung to the wine of her mouth,
she who will not grant him a turn of her neck?
I would have feared the sharpness of her arched eyebrow.
لَوif بِتّI spent the night مُغتَبِقاًdrinking at evening مُدامةَthe wine ريقِهاof her saliva
لَخَشيتُI would surely fear صارمَthe keen sword جَفنِهاof her eyelid العِربِيدِdrunkenly riotous
Were I to spend the night drinking the wine of her saliva,
If you wish to slake a thirst, then pour
I would fear the keen sword of her riotous eyelid.
The water of beauty over the rose apple of her cheek.
إِنif شِئتَyou wish أنto تَطْويgo without sustenance علىin ظَمَأٍthirst فَرِدْthen come to

If you wish to endure thirst, then come to
A coquette makes the heart of the dignified sick
beauty's water upon a tender maiden's cheek.
Just as the love for a coquette makes the heart sick.
غيداءُa supple maiden يُسقِمُmakes ill بالملاحةِthrough loveliness دَلُّهَاher coquetry
جِسمَthe body العَميدِof the lovesick man كَذاكَsuch is دلّthe coquetry الغيدِof graceful maidens
A supple maiden: her coquetry, through beauty, sickens
My eyes wrote her a message of union
the lovesick man's body—such is graceful maidens' coquetry.
But the glance of her eye erased it with coldness.
كَتَبَتْwrote لهاto her وَصلاًunion إِشارةُthe gesture ناظِريof my eye
فَمَحاهُso it erased it ناظِرُthe pupil طَرفِهاof her eye بِصُدودِwith rejection
My eye's gesture wrote her a message of union,
The warbling of a singing bird awakens my sobbing
then the pupil of her eye erased it with rejection.
Adorned with the instrument of melody.
وَلَقَدand indeed يَهيجُstirs لِيَin me البُكاءَweeping صَبابَةًout of longing
شادٍa singer مُطوَّقُcollared around آلةِthe instrument التّغريدِof song
And indeed, tears of longing are stirred in me
The bracelets of the night knock against its feathers
by a singer whose instrument of song is ringed with a collar.
With undiscovered uniquely precious gems.
باتَتspent the night سَواريnight-traveling showers الطَلِّof dew تَضرِبُstriking ريشَهُits feathers

بجواهرٍwith jewels لمdid not تَدْرِknow سِلْكَa string فريدِof pearls
All night, wandering dew-showers struck its feathers
It sang to the melody of a lute that sounded
with jewels that had never known a string of pearls.
Like the reciprocal chanting in the monastery.
غَنّىsang عَلىupon عُودٍa branch يَميسُswaying بِهِwith it كَماas

It sang upon a branch that swayed with it, as
And the night demolished raising with its darkness
Ma'bad sang answering strains upon the lute.
The white domes over the dark minarets.
واللَّيلand night قَوّضَstruck camp رافِعاًhoisting منfrom شَبهِهِits likeness

And night struck camp, seeming to hoist
And the dawn picks up from its set of stars
white pavilions onto noble black camels.
Whatever was scattered in the horizons.
والصبحُand dawn يلقطgathers منfrom جُمَانِthe pearls نجومِهِof its stars
ماwhat كانَwas فيin الآفاقِthe horizons ذاhaving تَبديدِdispersion
And dawn gathers from the pearls of night's stars
A flower whose lights have faded, as though it were
those that lay scattered across the horizons.
The lamps of musk, extinguished into stillness.
زُهْرٌbright stars خَبَتْfaded أنوارُهَاtheir lights فَكَأَنَّهاso they seemed like

Bright stars whose lights have faded, as though they were
Like the flowers of Nawar, plucked from
lamps in niches that had been put out.
Every green meadow overflowing with generosity.
كَأَزاهِرِlike blossoms النُوّارِof flowers تَقطِفُهاpluck them مَهاًoryxes

Like flowers in bloom that oryxes pluck
Like arrows with which its horsemen stabbed,
from every green, rain-drenched tract of land.
Then refrained from spearing with composure.
كَأَسِنَّةٍlike spearheads طَعَنَتْthrust بهاwith them فُرسانُهاtheir horsemen

ثُمَّthen امتَسكنَthey lodged fast عَنِapart from القَناthe shafts بِكبودِin livers
Like spearheads with which their horsemen thrust,
Like the eyes of lovers which kar gave permission
then lodged in livers, apart from their shafts.
To those who had sweetened them with wooing.
كَعُيونِlike the eyes عُشّاقٍof lovers أبَاحَallowed لهاto them الكَرىsleep

مَنْthe one who كانhad عَذّبَهُنّtormented them بالتَّسهِيدِwith sleeplessness
Like lovers' eyes, to which sleep was granted
And the dawn flashes time after time
by the one who had tormented them with sleeplessness.
Like the unsheathing of a polished sword.
والصبحُand dawn يبرقُflashes كرّةًtime فيafter كرّةٍtime
مِثلَlike استلالِthe drawing الصارِمِof the keen sword المَغمودِsheathed
And dawn flashes, time after time,
And those dark shadows dispersed from the brilliance
like the drawing of a keen, sheathed sword.
Of a blade that splits its determination with firmness.
وَتَفرَّقَتand scattered تِلكَthose الغَياهِبُdepths of darkness عَنaway from سَناthe radiance

فلقٍof daybreak يُفَلّقُsplits هامَهاtheir heads بِعَمُودِwith a pillar
And those depths of darkness parted to reveal the radiance
I have experienced time like an experienced experimenter,
of daybreak, which splits their heads with a pillar.
And conversed with its hidden side with loaded integrity.
إِنِّيindeed I خَبرتُhave experienced الدَّهرTime خُبْرَwith the knowledge مُجَرّبٍof a seasoned man
وكلمْتُand I wounded غاربَهُits withers بِحَمْلِwith a load قتودِof saddle-frames
I have known Time as a man seasoned by experience,
In it, fortune is submissive to my palm,
and wounded its withers with a load of saddle-frames.
Benighted with ignorance from the light of sciences.
فالحَظّso fortune فيهِin it طَوْعُobedient to كَفّيْthe two hands of مُظْلِمٍa benighted man

بِالجَهلِby ignorance مِنfrom نورِthe light العُلومِof learning بَلِيدِa dullard
So fortune in it obeys the two hands of one benighted
And praise among people is not guaranteed
by ignorance, a dullard far from the light of learning.
Except for Ahmad, the Most High, the Most Generous.
والحَمدُand praise فيamong الأَقوامِpeoples غَيرُnot مُسَلّمٍconceded

And praise among men is not conceded
One who does not bestow gifts upon the destitute
except to Ahmad, possessor of eminence and generosity.
Until he bestows upon them his inheritance.
مَنwho لاnot يَجودُgives generously علىto العُفاةِpetitioners بطارِفٍwith newly acquired wealth

حَتّىuntil يَجودَhe gives generously عليهمُto them بِتَليدِwith inherited wealth
He gives petitioners no newly acquired wealth
He ripped through conventions with a rending sword,
until he has given them his inherited riches.
A cloud bursting with thunder, shaking off sluggishness.

He has broken custom—a noble giver whose bounty
He takes refuge in a noble lineage, his house
pours from copious clouds, making solid rock sprout leaves.
Extending to the times of 'Aad and Thamood in the heights.
يأويhe takes refuge إلىin شَرَفٍnobility تَقَادَمَhas grown ancient بيتُهُits house

He shelters in a nobility whose house has long endured
Circling through the sublime degrees,
in eminence since the ages of 'Ad and Thamud.
With the full moon in the constellations warbling.

Moving to and fro among lofty ranks,
Like the sun, his position is far in the sky
while the full moon sings in the zodiacal towers.
Yet his rays on earth are not far.
كَالشَّمسِlike the sun يَبْعُدُis far away فيin السماءِthe sky مَحَلُّهاits station

Like the sun, whose station is distant in the sky,
He meets the faces of those seeking refuge with a smile
yet whose rays upon the earth are not far away.
Of affability and a hand sweeping with generosity.
يَلقىmeets وُجوهَthe faces المُعتَفينَof petitioners بِغُرّةٍwith a radiant brow

He meets the faces of petitioners with a radiant brow,
His honor remains unattached to any liability
ever smiling, and a hand pouring forth generosity.
And his gifts incessantly undeviating.

His honor has always fled reproach,
In his abode is a fertile garden, its fertility
and his giving is not driven away by delay.
Eternally irrigated from a running spring.
فيin رَبعِهِhis dwelling رَوضٌa garden مَرُودٌsought out خِصْبُهُits abundance

In his abode is a garden whose abundance is sought,
It is as if the night has within it stairways
always beside a much-frequented watering place.
Where its delegations meet with delegations.

And it is as though night had pathways within it,
The generous rushed ahead in his footsteps
when his delegations meet other delegations.
Like the constantly advancing feet of a tall ostrich.

He outstripped the noble, who came in his wake,
The turner of the two palms in the work of the Most High
like the tip of a long spear with evenly spaced joints.
Has never ceased bestowing and building.

His two hands busy in the work of eminence,
And glory - your hands do not raise its building
he has never been without giving and building.
Except with wealth, laid down with dew.

O son of mastership, leadership and sublimity,
except with wealth demolished by generosity.

O son of lordship, leadership, and eminence,
Take them gathered like stars, wonders
and of great fathers and great forefathers,
To which its poem is watered with every poem.

Take it: rare marvels like a string of pearls,
Its necklaces were fastened upon you and long ago
its ode recited alongside every poem.
Poems were composed for the generous kings.

my necklaces have been strung for the necks of kings.
