يقولونَthey say ليto me لاnot تُجيدُyou excel at الهِجاءَsatire
فقلتُso I said وماand why ليfor me أُجيدُI excel at الـمَديحْpraise poetry
They say to me, 'You do not excel at satire.'
They say to me, "You do not excel at satire"
So I said, 'And why do I excel at praise?'
So I said, "Why should I excel at praise?"
فقالواthen they said لأنَّكَbecause you تَرْجوyou hope for الثَّوابَreward
وهذاand this القِياسُreasoning لَعَمْريby my life صَحيحْsound
Then they said, 'Because you hope for reward.'
They said, "Because you hope for reward"
And this reasoning, by my life, is sound.
And truly this reasoning is sound
فقلتُthen I said صِفاتيmy descriptions فقالواthen they said حِسانٌbeautiful
فقلتُthen I said نَسيبيmy love poetry فقالواthen they said مَليحْlovely
I said, 'My descriptions?' They said, 'Beautiful.'
So I said, "My traits..." They said, "Are good"
I said, 'My love poetry?' They said, 'Lovely.'
I said, "My lineage..." They said, "Is fine"
فقلتُthen I said إليكمstand aside, all of you فليfor I have حُجَّةٌan argument
وللحَقِّand for the truth فيهاin it مجالٌroom فَسيحْample
I said, 'Stand aside, for I have an argument,
I said, "To you I have an argument
And within it the truth has ample room.'
And for the truth in it there is ample space"
عفافُpurity اللِّسانِof the tongue مَقالُspeaking الجَميلِwhat is beautiful
وفِسْقُand sinfulness اللِّسانِof the tongue مَقالُspeaking القَبيحْwhat is ugly
Purity of the tongue is speaking what is beautiful;
Restraint of tongue is speaking of beauty
And sinfulness of the tongue is speaking what is ugly.
While loose tongue is speaking of ugliness
وماand what ليfor me وماand what لامرئٍfor a man مُسْلِمٍMuslim
يَرُوحُhe goes away بِسَيْفِby the sword of لِسانيmy tongue جَريحْwounded
And what business have I with a Muslim man
And why should I, or any Muslim,
Who goes away wounded by the sword of my tongue?
Go around wounding with the sword of my tongue
