تخالفَتِdiverged النياتُthe intentions يومthe day تحمّلواthey departed
تخالفَتِ النياتُ يوم تحمّلوا
فركبٌso a caravan إلىtoward شرقeast وركبٌand a caravan إلىtoward غربِwest
فركبٌ إلى شرق وركبٌ إلى غربِ
Their intentions diverged the day they departed:
The intentions differed when they set out,
one caravan toward the east, and another toward the west.
One party heading east, the other west.
وماand not قُدّwas split lengthwise قَدّlike the splitting of السيرِa leather strap بالسيرِby the journey بينهمْbetween them
وما قُدّ قَدّ السيرِ بالسيرِ بينهمْ
ولكنّماbut only المنقدّwhat was split بينهمُbetween them قلبيmy heart
ولكنّما المنقدّ بينهمُ قلبي
And it was no leather strap that their journey split between them;
Yet the distance covered wasn't what came between them-
rather, what was split between them was my heart.
Rather it was my heart, torn by their divide.
