The one I never tire of has grown tired of me.
The one I desire does not desire me,
And his coquetry has melted my heart.
And melts my heart with his glance.

كلَّما مَاشاهُ ظِلُّه
A young gazelle shies away in fear
He startles like a gazelle in fright
whenever his shadow walks beside him.
Whenever his shadow comes near.

نظرة منك تُعِلّه
O you of languid gaze, my body—
Oh sickness in my weary eyes,
a glance from you makes it ill.
One look from you would heal me.

عَجَبي كيفَ تُقِلّهْ
A rump is suspended from your waist;
Tied around your waist a bundle -
I marvel at how you bear it.
How strange that you carry it!

O gazelle, God has forbidden
Oh gazelle sanctified, no blood
the shedding of my blood, yet he makes it lawful.
shed, though it was made halal.

Beauty is but a dwelling
Beauty has a place, for you,
for you—or you are its dwelling.
Or you are the place of beauty.

All of it, in your face.
