وسَلْمُ المَنايا كالخَديعَةِ في الحربِ
The message of calamities is a grievous matter indeed.
The discourses of calamities, how majestic they are!
And death's truce is like a ruse in war.
And the peace of death is like deception in war.

You ask the days to restrain their reversals—
You want the days to cease their vicissitudes,
Can the nature of vipers turn away from biting?
Can the nature of snakes change from biting?

You encounter death while in the prime of life.
How many birds meet their end where they pick up grain!
How long does a bird live inside the snare?

All people delude themselves about what befalls them
Though before their age's calamities they are acacias bound for stripping.
While they make peace treaties against the calamities of fate.

With the cup of our father Adam we drank
Contains death's intoxication—what a draught!
That which contained the intoxication of death—what a drink!

When a newborn inherits the illness of its father
Then turn him away from the devices of healing and medicine.
Blame it not, for disease and medicine are helpless.

Deaths raid the grazing herd of souls;
Death swoops down on the souls' meadows to change them.
So tell me: how can they go forth with their flock secure?
Tell me, how can they remain secure from its talons?

The warrior pours over himself a virgin coat of mail,
Old age makes a withering ruin of sprightly youth
In which you fancy womanhood in the keen-edged man.
Femininity seems incongruous in aged masculinity.

When the onslaught of senility melts his body
Like a torrent's flood, yet solid at the ankle.
It flows like a torrent and freezes upon the ankle.

Yet a piercing arrow kills him outright, one that cannot be warded off;
And a deadly arrow strikes him, unavoidable,
Its archer lurks within his entrails, concealed behind the inner membrane.
Having no shield in the battle, hiding in the robes.

No numb and drugged man is safe from death.
Whose anger shows in the bared whites of its wrathful eyes.
Its wrath appears through grinding teeth.

Were embedded in its mouth on both sides.

How can we ward death off from our brains
When even the lions of the thickets are vanquished by it?
When the strong overwhelm the weak?

Circles far up in the sky, yet close at hand.
Circling down from the sky onto the grave.

When dawn glimmers, it brandishes its glitter
By forms from the shadows like spear-shafts and sword-blades.
And phantoms of planets and stars flutter in the shadows.

Her quarry except with its skull battered.
You see them only fluttering helplessly.

If one seeks refuge atop a towering peak,
The daughters of time toward them, along the difficult ascent.
The girls of fate reach it by arduous climbing.

Onto every steadfast mountain at daybreak.

God's command will scatter their towering mountains,
God's command will demolish its lofty peaks
As the winds scatter the loose heaps of dunes.
As souls demolish decaying bodies pell-mell.

And the planets will detach from their axial poles.

Who pours streams of tears from the land of the West?
The East, her weeping overflowing in the West?

With downpours in which the dust is pleased with the clouds.
Clouds He pleased to pour down generously.

For it was exalted by my noble aunt's presence
Whom I mourn with sobbing until death.
I weep over it with wailing until I can wail no more.

When grief joins their pouring to still more pouring.
When grief and pouring become one.

Had I been sure not to drown I would have poured it out,
But my tender heart took pity on my heart.
But my moist heart is tender toward my moist heart.

Despite me the caravans' tongues eulogize her for highness—
How can I turn back the death-tidings on the travelers' tongues?
How can I prevent the tongues of travelers from eulogy?

A grave strange to her land's graves though adjacent,
Dwelling in a region of spear-thrusts and blows.
Neighborly in scheming wounds and strikes.

Her body withered from it down to the shinbone.

And the world bore noble offspring in her noble forefathers.
Rose to the excellence her noble ancestors attained.

Mourning gatherings to weep for her, we wept with the stars.
We held rites of mourning for her alongside meteors.

She had quenched a thirsty man's thirst with cool sweet water,

With a loving she-camel's yearning cry that pierced her calf's two ears.
Rending my hearing with the sincerity of her passion.

And leaned him, whose precincts were verdant, against my side.
And propped up his delicate side against my side.

The hands were blessed in smoothing the soil
Over a mountain, steadfast in forbearance, upon a hill.
Over a mountain solidly rooted on a plateau.

The rain of their tears envied them,
Or did the great bucket's rope snap in their hands?
Or did the misery of exile grow from their hands?

And my eyes would scatter dust upon it with their lashes.
While my eyes sprinkled dust upon it slowly.

The jewel of pure lineage would be garlanded with them.
The essence of lineage would be threaded on them as pearls.

Father of al-Hasan, days fell the wealthy
And follow it with affliction, deceiving through love.
Then follow with tribulation and deceive with love.

Your grief part of my grief, your adversity my adversity.

So patience—reward is only for those who endure
Time, for time has never been free of calamity.
Afflictions of fate, for fate is never without distress.

Continually marching off and returning like sinners?
