فعوّضْتُso I received in exchange شيباًgray hair منin exchange for شبابيmy youth كأنّنيas though I
تَوَلّيتُI turned away عنfrom ظلٍّshade برغميagainst my will إلىtoward الشمسِthe sun
So I received gray hair in exchange for my youth, as though I
I have traded some of my youth for old age, as though
had turned away from shade, against my will, toward the sun.
I have been forced from shade into the sun.
وقَطْعيand my certainty بعيشٍof living بعدbeyond ستّينsixty حجّةًyears
أرىI see فيهin it لَبْساًuncertainty والتخوّفand apprehension فيin اللبسِuncertainty
And as for my certainty of living beyond sixty years,
And my living on a meager income after sixty pilgrimages -
I see uncertainty in it, and in uncertainty lies fear.
I see in it much hardship and fear of hardship.
ذنوبيَmy sins تنميgrow كلّevery يومٍday تكسّباًthrough earning
فيوْميso my day بهاbecause of them فيin اليوْمthe day أثقلُheavier منthan أمسيmy yesterday
My sins grow each day as I keep earning them;
My sins grow every day, gaining strength.
So, because of them, my day today is heavier than my yesterday.
So I am weighed down more today than yesterday.
ألاoh آمنَmay He allay الرحمنthe All-Merciful خوفيmy fear بِعَفْوِهِwith His pardon
فإنّيَfor indeed I منfrom نفسيmy own self أخافI fear علىfor نفسيmyself
Oh, may the All-Merciful allay my fear with His pardon,
If only the Merciful One would relieve my fears with His pardon!
For I fear for myself because of my own self.
For I fear for myself because of my own soul.
