كظبيةٍlike a gazelle رُوّعتterrified بذيبِby a wolf
كظبيةٍ رُوّعت بذيبِ
She visited despite her fear of a watcher,
like a gazelle terrified by a wolf.
كافورةٌa piece of camphor فيin بياضِwhiteness لونٍcomplexion
كافورةٌ في بياضِ لونٍ
ومسكةٌand a piece of musk فيin ذكيِّintensely fragrant طيبِperfume
ومسكةٌ في ذكيِّ طيبِ
Camphor in the whiteness of her complexion,
and musk in her intense fragrance.
كادتshe nearly تروّيquenched غليلَburning thirst صبٍّa lovesick man
كادت تروّي غليلَ صبٍّ
فؤادهhis heart منهfrom it فيin لهيبِflame
فؤاده منه في لهيبِ
She nearly quenched a lovesick man's burning thirst,
his heart aflame with it,
منfrom ثَغَبٍa pool باردٍcool حصاهits pebbles
من ثَغَبٍ باردٍ حصاه
منظمstrung اللؤلؤpearls الشنيبِcool and sweet
منظم اللؤلؤ الشنيبِ
from a cool pool whose pebbles
were strung pearls, cool and sweet—
حتىuntil إذاwhen ما(emphasis) طمعتُI hoped منهfrom it
حتى إذا ما طمعتُ منه
بحَسْوةfor a sip الطائرthe bird المُريبِwary
بحَسْوة الطائر المُريبِ
until, just as I hoped to drink from it
a sip like that of a wary bird,
ولّتْshe turned away فَقُلْso say فيof طلوعthe rising شمسa sun
ولّتْ فَقُلْ في طلوع شمس
قدalready أخذتit began عنهaway from it فيto الغروبِset
قد أخذت عنه في الغروبِ
she turned away—picture a sun at sunrise,
already beginning to set as it rose.
كانwas زمانthe duration اللقاءthe meeting منهاwith her
كان زمان اللقاء منها
أقصرshorter منthan جلسةa sitting الخطيبِthe preacher
أقصر من جلسة الخطيبِ
The time of my meeting with her was
shorter than a preacher's sitting.
