بأنّthat غرابَthe raven البَينِof parting يَنْعَبُcaws فيin الصّبحِthe morning
She gestured, while clouds of tears poured unceasingly,
The clouds of tears ever flowing down the cheeks
that the raven of parting caws at dawn.
Say that the raven of separation croaks at dawn,
فقلتُso I said أقيميapply منfrom عِقاصِكِyour braided locks صبغَةًa hue

So I said: lay a hue from your braided locks
So I said: "Stain the night with your kohl,
upon the night, bestowing one dark span of it on another.
To guide it wing to wing from it.
عسَىperhaps طولهits length يَثنيturns aside عنfrom البَينِparting عَزْمَهُhis resolve
وتُفضيand leads بهwith him حَرْبُthe war الفراقِof separation إلىto الصّلحpeace
Perhaps its length will turn his resolve away from parting,
May its length dissuade separation from its resolve,
and the war of separation will lead him to peace.
And the battle of parting end in peace."

And in the gaps between the pearls of the gazelle of al-Liwā
Between the pearls of the cheek of the doe of wish
lies pure saliva that does not heal my wound.
Are gashes that cannot be cured.

A pampered woman among the tribe—for her protection was fastened
She of the soft life marked hers for protection
openly to the sword's edge the spear's upper part.
Openly with the edge of the tall spear.
فقِفْso stop بحياةِby the life النّفسِof the soul عنaway from مصرعthe killing ground الرّدىof death
فمنfor whoever لاdoes not يدانِapproach النّارَthe fire يَنجُescapes منَfrom اللّفحِscorching heat
So, by the soul's life, stay clear of death's killing ground;
Stop your soul from the fate of loss,
for whoever does not approach the fire escapes its scorching heat.
For he who fears not the fire will escape the flame.
فكمْfor many a مُهجَةٍheart قدindeed غَرّهاdeceived it الحبّlove بالمُنىwith hopes
فأسلفهاand advanced it الخسرانَloss فيin طَلَبِseeking الرّبحِprofit
For love has beguiled many a heart with hopes,
How many a loving woman, deluded by love to desire,
then advanced it loss in its quest for profit.
Has pledged herself loss in seeking profit.
