Rise, for night has sent its darkness away,

And dawn has come, raising his banner.

As though a sword of light lay in his palm,

He severs whatever dense darkness he touches with it.

As though the lion of the stars were startled by him,

So he enters a thicket through the west.

Trills his melody upon his little branch.

Its forelock from dawn's white blaze.

As though the sun were a glowing coal that began

To burn a charcoal lump from each patch of darkness.

Take from the vine a draught that reveals

To the drinkers a fragrance its breath had concealed.

As though Time, in its workings,

Had stored its own antiquity in the wine's long life.

It shows you a delicate ruby,

Smiling in the glass, revealing pearls.

To song accompanied by a beauty's lute,

Her fingertips sending their red shoots running over it.

Her plectrum's tongue—you see her hand

As its mouth; would that I could kiss that mouth!

And a young gazelle with languor in his eyelids,

As though I bore his pain for him.

He bade us farewell, hasty in his greeting,

And broke our union the moment he formed it.

His visit was a mere halt beside us,

Like one setting his foot upon a glowing coal.

As though the night of union, from its brevity,

Had merged its darkness into the break of dawn.
