ياO ليلُnight هلis there لِصباحيfor my morning فيكَwithin you إِشراقُa dawning
فَقَدfor indeed نَفىhas banished النومَsleep عنfrom عَينَيَّmy two eyes إِيراقُsleeplessness
O night, will my morning dawn within you?
O night, will my dawn shine within you?
For sleeplessness has banished sleep from my eyes.
Sleep has been banished from my tearful eyes.
عَساكِرُarmies البقِّbedbugs نَحويtoward me فيكَwithin you زاحِفَةcrawling
كأنّماas though بُثّwas scattered وَسْطَin the middle of البيتthe house سمّاقُsumac
Armies of bedbugs crawl toward me within you,
Armies of insects creep toward me in you,
As though sumac had been scattered in the middle of the house:
As if venom was spilled inside the house.
مِنof كُلِّevery طاعِنَةِstabbing creature الخُرطومِthe proboscis ساريةٍroaming by night
كَأَنَّas though لَسعَتَهاits sting بالنارِwith fire إِحراقُa scorching
Each a night-roaming creature that stabs with its proboscis,
From every mosquito with a piercing proboscis
As though its sting were a scorching by fire.
It's as if its sting burns with fire.
