بانَhas departed عُذْريmy excuse فكيفَso how يُقْبَلُis accepted عذريmy excuse
O my sins, by God, you have weighed down my back.
O my sins, you have weighed down my back
My excuse is gone; how, then, can my excuse be accepted?
My excuse has become clear, so how can my excuse be accepted?
كلَّماwhenever تُبْتُI repented ساعةًfor an hour عُدْتُI returned أُخرىanother

لِضُروبٍto various kinds منof سوءِevil in فِعليmy deeds وهُجريand my foul speech
Whenever I repented for an hour, I returned in another
Whenever I repent for an hour, I return to sin another
To various forms of evil in my deeds and foul speech.
Due to the forms of my evil deeds and estrangement

غَيْهَبُthe deep darkness اللَّيلِof night فيهin it عنaway from نُورِthe light of فجرِdawn
My step has grown heavy, and at my temple has split apart
My steps have become heavy and my delegation has scattered
The darkness of night, revealing the light of dawn.
The darkness of night in it, away from the light of dawn

The death of stillness crept into my movements,
The death of stillness crept into my movements
And my red embers died down in their ashes.
And the embers of my burning coals faded into its ashes
وأناand I حيثُwherever سرْتُI went آكلُI eat رزقيmy sustenance

And wherever I go, I eat my sustenance,
And I, wherever I went, ate my sustenance
Yet time eats away my life.
Yet time eats away my life

Whenever a span of it passed with gain
Whenever time passed with profit
From my life, I found my loss in that gain.
From my life I found loss in profit
كلَّماwhenever مَرَّpassed مِنهُof it وَقتٌa span of time بِربحٍwith gain

Whenever time passed with profit
His knowledge of the difference between my hidden and open conduct.
His knowledge of the differing of my secrets and public acts

منهfrom it واجبرْand mend برأفةٍwith compassion منكfrom You كسريmy brokenness
Incline my heart toward mending my corruption
My heart is tired of the corruption of my immorality
That comes from it; and with compassion from You, mend my brokenness.
So reform it by your kind mercy my fracture
وأَجِرْنيand grant me refuge ممّاfrom what جَناهُhas committed it لِسانيmy tongue

And grant me refuge from what my tongue has wrought,
And protect me from what my tongue has harvested
And what the whisperings of my mind have murmured to one another.
And the insinuations my thoughts whisper to me
