O image of beauty that has risen

with the sun in a slender shoot of the bān tree!

Why does your Bilqis-like beauty not

show tenderness toward my Solomon-like longing?

When I found that love for you had pervaded me,

I knew with certainty that love for you was spiritual.

Do not deny an illness that has wasted me away,

for my body's sickness comes from the languor of your gaze.

Oh, how can I conceal my love for a deadly woman,

when my secrecy and my openness both reveal it?

She is human; the memory of loving her

is a female jinn that enfolds me in longing.

And indeed, a passion for her pervades me,

from which my forgetfulness cannot ransom me.

O you who repay me with ill treatment,

is this how my kindness is rewarded?

By the father of my love for you—and never have I sworn by him

    without truthfulness being my way—

may life's sweetness never be sweet to me, nor

slumber pass through the inner depths of my eyelids,

until I see, as union brings us together,

the pupil of your eye directly opposite my own.
