Now the fear of every broken soul has subsided,

And Muhammad's faith has been strengthened by Muhammad.

If God's victory has flung its gate open,

Then your father hastened to knock upon it with a sword of Indian steel.

And led God's host toward his foe,

For war cuts off the rebel's nose.

In a vast army, above which its dust rises,

Like the vapor of a green sea foaming in the gales.

Alfonso's eyelids were struck by a host from him, brimming

With lions in a thicket of swaying spears.

And as though he had gathered the barbarians as firewood and driven them

With a blaze of blows, kindled by keen swords.

Sword-edges shattered Alfonso's battalions, until, when

They made for him, he showed a fugitive's nape.

In a night that robed itself to hide his form

From us, so even Farqad's eye did not glimpse him.

At nightfall he made false denials in a darkness

That sheltered him, and thus showed him a white hand of favor.

He fled; the gleam of a drawn sword mimicked lightning,

And, in alarm, a sleek steed's whinny mimicked thunder.

The steed galloped with him over his horsemen,

Fallen, as though drunk on a sleep-inducing drug.

Each doubly drunk, from wine and from

The edge of a death-dealer, drunkenly raging against him.

Minarets are built of their heads, because

They used to set out at dawn to demolish minarets.

And war, with the men's egg-like helmets, seemed as though

Brooding birds had laid them on the barren plain.
