وكئيبٍand a sorrowful man شجاهgrieved him شَجْوُthe grief كئيبَهْa sorrowful woman
Many an exile has been yearned for by an exiled woman,
How many a stranger his fellow did yearn
and many a sorrowful man has been grieved by a sorrowful woman's grief.
And how many a weary one solace did spurn
سُلّطَتْwas unleashed كرْبةُthe anguish التنائيseparation عليناupon us
فعسىso may فرحةُthe joy التدانيdrawing near قريبهْnear
The anguish of separation has been unleashed upon us;
On us did the torment of parting descend
so may the joy of reunion be near.
May the joy of reunion soon happiness lend
فمتىso when نلتقيwe meet فتصبحَso that it becomes منّاamong us
كلّeach نفسٍsoul لكلّfor every نفسٍsoul طَبيبهa healer
When, then, shall we meet, so that among us
When together we meet and turn grief into glee
each soul may become a healer to every soul?
Each soul to each soul will a comforter be
